Proposed F19 Feature: MATE Desktop 1.6
by Jaroslav Reznik
= Features/MATE-Desktop-1.6 =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/MATE-Desktop-1.6
Feature owner(s): Dan Mashal <dan.mashal AT fedoraproject DOT org>
MATE Desktop is based on GNOME 2 and provides an intuitive and attractive
desktop to Linux users who seek a simple, easy to use traditional interface.
== Detailed description ==
MATE is a traditional Gnome 2 like desktop user interface. Many users have
expressed interest in this feature since Fedora 15 in which Fedora was
switched from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3.
For the advanced user that doesn't want a cutting edge desktop and just wants
to keep it simple this is perfect for them.
The popularity of MATE Desktop is very high. It is one of the 2 choices of
DE's for Linux Mint which is one of the most popular Linux distros out right
now.

Proposed F19 Feature: Dracut HostOnly
by Jaroslav Reznik
= Features/DracutHostOnly =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/DracutHostOnly
Feature owner(s): Harald Hoyer <harald(a)redhat.com>
Only create "host-only" initramfs images. A generic fallback image should be
installed by anaconda on installation/update and never ever be removed.
== Detailed description ==
Current initramfs images contain most of the kernel drivers to boot from any
hardware. This results in a very big initramfs, which takes a long time to
load on system start and a long time to create on kernel updates. Switching to
host-only will improve the situation. To cope with hardware change, a boot
entry "Rescue System" should be installed with a full fledged initramfs also
containing debug tools. This boot entry can then be used to recover from
hardware changes and also from unforseen software failure after updates.

Proposed F19 Feature: High Availability Container Resources
by Jaroslav Reznik
= Features/ High Availability Container Resources =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/High_Availability_Container_Resou...
Feature owner(s): David Vossel <dvossel(a)redhat.com>
The Container Resources feature allows the HA stack (Pacemaker + Corosync)
residing on a host machine to extend management of resources into virtual
guest instances (KVM/LXC).
== Detailed description ==
This feature is in response to the growing desire for high availability
functionality to be extended outside of the host into virtual guest instances.
Pacemaker is currently capable of managing virtual guests, meaning Pacemaker
can start/stop/monitor/migrate virtual guests anywhere in the cluster, but
Pacemaker has no ability to manage the resources that live within the virtual
guests. At the moment these virtual guests are very much a black box to
Pacemaker.
The Container Resources feature changes this by giving Pacemaker the ability
to reach into the virtual guests and manage resources in the exact same way
resources are managed on the host nodes. Ultimately this gives the HA stack
the ability to manage resources across all the nodes in cluster as well as any
virtual guests that reside within those cluster nodes.

Mass changing 500 packages BR:maven to BR:maven-local - TOMORROW(ish)
by Stanislav Ochotnicky
Now that I have your attention...
Fedora Maven package is currently a mix of upstream release and our changes that
we need for building RPMs. We can clean it up, but we need to move packages from
BR: maven to BR:maven-local. That will enable users to install Maven package
without installing a lot of other stuff they don't necessarily need.
This change will not affect buildroots because maven-local pulls in maven
package.
The only issue is: there's mass rebuild scheduled for 8.2. I would like to
rebuild Maven packages before that. We have a modified mass-rebuild script that
can do the change of maven -> maven-local automatically. Strictly speaking this
change is also breaking current Java guidelines, but I believe for the better
(change proposal should be up today/tomorrow, with SIG meeting following).
I am looking for a blessing from a community to do this change
tomorrow/Wednesday so that F19 is even more awesome :-) Is there anyone who
feels strongly against this change? I realize this is very short-notice, but
I believe disruption this change will cause is nil.

There's nothing obviously going on inside the virtual machine. Load
average is 0.00. The VM is still perfectly responsive, plenty of
free memory and so on.
It appears as if it's yum itself which is stuck:

4226 ? S 0:09 \_ sshd: rjones@pts/1
4227 pts/1 Ss 0:00 \_ -bash

Yum is blocked on a futex:
$ sudo strace -p 13397
Process 13397 attached
futex(0x7f908292fc0c, FUTEX_WAIT, 1, NULL
Is there a way I can see what (if anything) is holding on to this
mutex?

Re: Proposed F19 Feature: Replace MySQL with MariaDB
by Andrew Rist
We've been following the discussions to replace MySQL with MariaDB in
Fedora, and would like to provide additional data to help the community
make the most informed decision. Instead of switching**the default to
MariaDB 5.5 we would like to propose that Fedora instead integrate MySQL
5.6. Switching to MariaDB would be going backwards, as their releases
usually lag by at least 6 months. The differences between MariaDB 5.5
and MySQL 5.6 are quite significant, with major improvements in both
performance and stability [1] , as well as additional features and
improved security [2].
With hundreds of development and QA engineers, including MySQL veterans
and fresh talent, Oracle has produced the most stable, secure, and
scalable releases of open source MySQL ever. We are ready to help
integrate and package the latest and best-tested version of MySQL in
Fedora, including becoming the package maintainer (same as we do with
Ubuntu).
15 years of contributing to the Linux kernel, 8 years developing InnoDB,
and now 3 years leading MySQL represent a track record that speaks for
itself. Fedora's corporate sponsor and Oracle do compete in the Linux
support business, but the database choice for Fedora should only focus
on the merits and the quality of the MySQL code. If Fedora, as the
mission statement says wants to "lead, and not follow" we recommend you
keep MySQL, the leading edge and highest quality open source database,
as the default choice in your Linux distribution.

NSS in Rawhide updated to nss-3.12.4
by Elio Maldonado
To all interested,
This is the upstream announcement:
[NOTE: NSS 3.14.2 does not include a fix for the attacks described in
the paper "Lucky Thirteen: Breaking the TLS and DTLS Record Protocols"
(http://www.isg.rhul.ac.uk/tls/ <http://www.isg.rhul.ac.uk/tls/>). An
upcoming NSS patch release will
address the attacks.]
Network Security Services (NSS) 3.14.2 is a patch release for NSS 3.14.
The bug fixes in NSS 3.14.2 are described in the "Bugs Fixed" section
below. NSS 3.14.2 should be used with NSPR 4.9.5 or newer.
The release is available for download from
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/security/nss/releases/NSS_3_14_2_...
<https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/security/nss/releases/NSS_3_14_2_...>
For the primary NSS documentation pages please visit
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/NSS
<https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/NSS>
New in NSS 3.14.2
* NSS will now make use of the Intel AES-NI and AVX instruction sets
for hardware-accelerated AES-GCM on 64-bit Linux systems.
* Initial manual pages for some NSS command line tools have been added.
They are still under review, and contributions are welcome. The
documentation is in the docbook format and can be rendered as HTML
and UNIX-style manual pages using an optional build target.
New Types:
* in certt.h
- cert_pi_useOnlyTrustAnchors
* in secoidt.h
- SEC_OID_MS_EXT_KEY_USAGE_CTL_
SIGNING
Notable Changes in NSS 3.14.2
* Bug 805604 - Support for AES-NI and AVX accelerated AES-GCM was
contributed by Shay Gueron of Intel. If compiled on Linux systems in
64-bit mode, NSS will include runtime detection to check if the
platform supports AES-NI and PCLMULQDQ. If so, NSS uses the optimized
code path, reducing the CPU cycles per byte to 1/20 of what was
required before the patch
( https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=805604
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=805604> and
https://crypto.stanford.edu/RealWorldCrypto/slides/gueron.pdf
<https://crypto.stanford.edu/RealWorldCrypto/slides/gueron.pdf>).
Support for other platforms, such as Windows, will follow in a future
NSS release. ( https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=540986
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=540986> )
* SQLite has been updated to 3.7.15.
* Bug 816853 - When using libpkix for certificate validation,
applications may now supply additional application-defined trust
anchors to be used in addition to those from loaded security tokens,
rather than as an alternative to.
( https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=816853
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=816853> )
* Bug 772144 - Basic support for running NSS test suites on Android
devices.This is currently limited to running tests from a Linux host
machine using an SSH connection. Only the SSHDroid app has been
tested.
* Bug 373108 - Fixed a bug where, under certain circumstances, when
applications supplied invalid/out-of-bounds parameters for AES
encryption, a double free may occur.
* Bug 813857 - Modification of certificate trust flags from multiple
threads is now a thread-safe operation.
* Bug 618418 - C_Decrypt/C_DecryptFinal now correctly validate the
PKCS #7 padding when present.
* Bug 807890 - Add support for Microsoft Trust List Signing EKU.
* Bug 822433 - Fix a crash in dtls_FreeHandshakeMessages.
* Bug 823336 - Reject invalid LDAP AIA URIs sooner.
Bugs fixed in NSS 3.14.2
*

<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?list_id=5502456;resolution=FIXED...>
Compatibility
NSS 3.14.2 shared libraries are backward compatible with all older NSS
3.x shared libraries. A program linked with older NSS 3.x shared
libraries will work with NSS 3.14.2 shared libraries without recompiling
or relinking. Furthermore, applications that restrict their use of NSS
APIs to the functions listed in NSS Public Functions will remain
compatible with future versions of the NSS shared libraries.
Feedback
Bugs discovered should be reported by filing a bug report with
bugzilla.mozilla.org <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org> (product NSS).

Working now on bringing it to F-18 and F-17.

glpk soname bump expected?
by Orion Poplawski
Looks like going from glpk 4.47 to 4.48 bumped the soname from
libglpk.so.0 to libglpk.so.33. Something tells me this was not expected
and is not correct. Can this be verified?

polkit changes in f19
by Matthias Clasen
I just realized that there is a change to the way polkit is packaged in f19 that spin maintainers should be aware of: the polkit package is just the service, which only provides the default policy as specified in the action definitions now. If you want or need support for js rules, you need to pull in the polkit-js-engine package. I've just made this change for the desktop spin.
