RANT: Packaging is changing too fast and is not well documented

<RANT> So I went to request a new branch of an existing package only to find out fedrepo-req-branch, which hasn't been around that long is already depreceated and the facility brought into fedpkg... so: $ fedpkg request-branch <branch> Could not execute request_branch: The "token" value must be set under the "fedpkg.pagure" section in your "fedpkg" user configuration Ok, so where does that get stored? $ man fedpkg (not in there...) $ vi /usr/share/doc/fedpkg/README (not in there...) I figured out somewhere else that the default config is in /etc/rpkg/fedpkg.conf (In /etc/rpkg? That's intuitive!) but I didn't want to add my token to the site wide config so the search continues... $ rpm -ql fedpkg (pokes around) $ vi /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fedpkg/__main__.py ... def main(): default_user_config_path = os.path.join( os.path.expanduser('~'), '.config', 'rpkg', '%s.conf' % cli_name) ... Found it! Now which token do I need? The one from the src.fedoraproject.org pagure or pagure.io? Oh and the tokens expire all the time and don't seem to have any helper scripts to automate updating of the tokens so I have to remember where they all are and manually edit them every time... </RANT> Not coming from a programming background I found the learning curve pretty steep when I first tried to become a packager, I'm not sure I wouldn't have given up if I had to do it now. Concerning /etc/opt usage

Today I have received pull request [1]. Since line 62 %dir %{_sysconfdir}/opt/chrome/native-messaging-hosts/ means /etc/opt/chrome/native-messaging-hosts/ and since packaging guidelines [2] say that a package may only use directories in the |/opt/fedora,| I would reject this pull request. What do you think about? GNOME 3.28.2 megaupdate

Hi all, Last coordinated GNOME 3.28.x point release is this week: 3.28.2. We still have the f28-gnome side target and same drill as usual to get builds in the megaupdate: build with 'fedpkg build --target f28-gnome' (or if you accidentally built without it, just do 'koji move-build f28-updates-candidate f28-gnome yourpackage-1.2.3.fc28') and I'll pick your build up when submitting the bodhi update later this week. Fedora Workstation and Third-Party Repositories

Hi all, Regarding the inclusion of the fedora-workstation-repositories package in F28, is there currently a policy in place against including it as a dependency? From what I understand from the recent fedora magazine article <https://fedoramagazine.org/third-party-repositories-fedora/> and the policy wiki page <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Workstation/Third_party_software_policies?...>, the purpose of distributing the third-party repositories an rpm is to ensure that a user must enable them explicitly. Is there some some preventative measure in place to protect users from the package being pulled in silently as a dependency? If repository-enabling rpms are to become acceptable cases for package submissions, what considerations are being taken to ensure such submissions are tracked and handled similarly? Apologies if this has been addressed before, but I haven't been able to find any documentation on the subject. Thanks, DB

orphaning and retiring some packages

I am orphaning certain packages and retiring some others that are no longer needed. Packages being **orphaned** fityk (depends on cmpfit) cmpfit (fityk is dependent on this) rarian csmith python-cclib Unfortunately, I fell behind in maintaining these packages (particularly csmith and cclib). These will need to be updated. Package being **retired** SuperLU43 This was brought into Fedora SuperLU as a compat package. Nothing in Fedora needs this packages any more and so is no longer needed. If interested, send me your FAS and I will transfer the project to you. If not, I will orphan/retire these packages in a few days (wednesday probably).

DNF producing nonsense results (and a bogus F28 updates compose?)

I just got some very strange behavior from dnf: $ sudo dnf upgrade --best --allowerasing Last metadata expiration check: 0:04:26 ago on Sat 05 May 2018 09:13:56 PM PDT. Dependencies resolved. ================================================================================ Package Arch Version Repository Size ===============================================================================$ Upgrading: vim-common x86_64 2:8.0.1788-1.fc28 updates 6.4 M Removing: vim-enhanced x86_64 2:8.0.1763-1.fc28 @updates 2.9 M Somehow dnf's solution was to upgrade vim-enhanced and them immediately remove it. How does that make sense? This was triggered by the following problem with the repo: Problem 1: cannot install the best update candidate for package vim-enhanced-2$ 8.0.1763-1.fc28.x86_64 - nothing provides perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.26.2) needed by vim-enhanced-2:8.0.1$ 88-1.fc28.x86_64 Problem 2: package vim-enhanced-2:8.0.1763-1.fc28.x86_64 requires vim-common = 2:8.0.1763-1.fc28, but none of the providers can be installed - cannot install both vim-common-2:8.0.1788-1.fc28.x86_64 and vim-common-2:8.$ .1763-1.fc28.x86_64 - problem with installed package vim-enhanced-2:8.0.1763-1.fc28.x86_64 - cannot install the best update candidate for package vim-common-2:8.0.1763-$ .fc28.x86_64 - nothing provides perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.26.2) needed by vim-enhanced-2:8.0.1$ 88-1.fc28.x86_64 but I don't see how it makes sense at all.
