Many packages unnecessarily link to libpython

Hello everyone, As of Python 3.8, python C extensions modules should not link to libpython, unless they embed the interpreter in their code. Relevant upstream PR: https://github.com/python/cpython/pull/12946 If your package links to libpython without requiring it, it won't be possible to use the python3-debug binary with your python C extension, unless you recompile the extension against it. On Fedora Rawhide, there are at this point 144 packages linking to libpython, many of those possibly without any need for it. If your package links to libpython but it does not embed the interpreter, I would like to ask you to unlink it. Usually the fix needs to be done at the package's build system. If you are not sure if your package links to libpython, a way to figure this out is to inspect the code for the Py_Initialize and the Py_Finalize calls [0]. If the code includes those calls, no action is required from your side. If it does not, linking to libpython is not required. RFC: Automatically generated BuildRequires for maven-based Java projects

Good $LOCAL_TIME_OF_DAY, I've been working on experimental support for automatically generating BuildRequires for maven-based Java projects, and it's now available for testing in rawhide (and in fedora 32, for local testing). There's no "macro support" for this yet, because it's still work-in-progress, though when it proves useful support for it might eventually get merged into the Java packaging macros directly. The good new is: it should basically "just work" if your package isn't doing anything weird, but this is Java we're talking about, so there's at least three limitations I can think of right now (the bad news): 1. no built-in blacklist for irrelevant plugins yet (e.g. maven-release-plugin) 2. no support for different profiles yet 3. no support for plugins that add additional dependencies in their configuration There are workarounds for the first two limitations: 1. It's pretty easy to just disable those plugins manually in %prep with "%pom_remove_plugin :maven-foo-plugin". 2. If you know ahead of time which submodules will get activated (e.g. based on a previous package build), just specify those modules on the mvn-genbr command line instead of letting mvn-genbr fail to find them. 3. just continue to specify those non-discoverable dependencies manually Usage in .spec files should be pretty simple, and similar to how other tools handle generated BuildRequires: - replace all java / "mvn(foo:bar)" dependencies with "BuildRequires: mvn-genbr", - but keep "BuildRequires: maven-local" (this is not automatically generated). - keep your "pom.xml" modifications in %prep, as usual (e.g. removing unnecessary maven plugins, changing dependencies, modifying XML with XPath queries) - add the following section to your .spec after %prep: %generate_buildrequires mvn-genbr -t . If you're not running the test suite (%mvn_build -f), then drop the -t / --with-tests flag. If the root directory of the maven project is not the toplevel directory, specify the name of the root directory / directories instead of "." (mvn-genbr accepts multiple arguments for this purpose. use "mvn-genbr --help" for current list of command line options). If you want to check out what automatic dependencies mvn-genbr will generate for your package, you can try it without kicking off a package build by dnf-installing "mvn-genbr" (available fedora 32+), and running it with the same arguments as in your .spec file in the source directory that's generated and processed by "fedpkg prep". Comparisons between the generated dependency lists and those that were curated "manually" would be of interest, especially for bug reports :) Since this is still work-in-progress (though it works for a few simple packages I tried it with), please feel free to report your experiences, and - more importantly - open issues when the tool either crashes (it shouldn't, since the POM parser successfully parsed all non-broken maven project files from all fedora packages), or when it generates too many (not that problematic) or too few (not so good) dependencies. Increasing the packaging team: regular workshops/vFADs/classroom sessions on packaging

Hi folks, The packaging team is generally quite stretched, and we frankly need more people helping us out. The main issue with newcomers taking on packaging is that the learning curve here is much more technical then a lot of other areas in Fedora. So, while it is still expected that folks read the docs and learn things themselves, perhaps we could be more active in helping them? We've had rpm packaging classroom sessions in the past. Are any folks interested in restarting these? Maybe a different SIG could do a session each month to help newcomers get started with packaging their tools? Open Seats on the Fedora Packaging Committee

The Fedora Packaging Committee has some open seats and is accepting submissions from interested candidates to serve on the FPC. The FPC would like to thank Orion Poplawski, and Jonathan Wakely for their service. This position involves not only reviewing Packaging Guideline drafts submitted to the FPC for consideration, but also helping rewrite drafts to resolve issues in a more acceptable fashion. Additionally, the FPC reviews UID/GID soft static assignment. Currently the FPC meets on IRC weekly, on Thursdays based around 12:00 east coast US time, for approximately an hour. That can change slightly, but any new time would need to be good for all the members (East Coast US and German TZs, at least). FPC members serve for as long as they are willing, there are currently no term limits. All decisions are voted on using a +1 (for), 0 (abstain), and -1 (against) mechanism, and all decisions must be approved by a majority (+5). FPC Meetings do not happen if a quorum (5 members) is not present. Candidates who are interested should provide the following details to the FPC for consideration, by emailing it directly to me (james(a)fedoraproject.org) The FPC will consider all candidates, but strongly prefers candidates who have extensive experience packaging in Fedora. dropping NSS DBM format support in F33+

Hello, I am not sure if this deserves a Fedora Change proposal, so I'd like to hear any opinions first before proceeding with the process. NSS (the crypto library used by Firefox) historically supports 2 database formats: SQLite and DBM. The latter is considered legacy and we switched the default database format to SQLite in F28[1]. Since then I presume most of the applications have switched to the new format. Therefore we are planning to phase out the support of DBM, targetting F33+. Please let me know if there is any concern. swap-on-ZRAM by default

Question and (pre)proposal: Can Fedora converge on a single swap-on-ZRAM implementation, and if so, which one? Fedora Workstation WG wants to move to swap-on-ZRAM by default in Fedora 33, and the working group needs to pick something soon. I think it should be zram-generator. It's the most lightweight, can be included by default distro wide. Without a configuration file, it doesn't run. Thus, each edition/spin, and even the install environment, can have their own configuration file, to setup it up however they want, or not set it up. I also suspect it's the only one that could be upstreamed to systemd proper, and just included like many other generators. Background story and references: Fedora IoT enables swap-on-ZRAM by default for a long time, and have no issues. Fedora Workstation WG has been evaluating it for some time, and wants to enable it by default in Fedora 33. Prior discussions [1] (Details will be in a future feature proposal.) Swap is a basic function, and swap-on-ZRAM is an optimization of a basic function. Basic things should be understandable by users, without having different configuration files, and systemd units to look for, depending on what edition/spin they use, or whether they're booting installation media, or an installed system. It's confusing. And they don't co-exist gracefully. There are three implementations in Fedora [2]. Installation media (DVD, netinstall, Live) use Anaconda's when the install media is booted; Live installations include it, but it's disabled. Fedora IoT has its own variant enabled by default, similar in design and function to Anaconda's, but differently named systemd unit, configuration file, and bash scripts used by the systemd unit. There's nothing wrong with these, but in my estimation they have no chance of being upstreamed to systemd proper. And there's zram-generator. It works much like any other of the basic generators for this sort of thing: the gpt-auto-generator, the fstab-generator, and the cryptsetup-generator. I'm not sure who would argue we need multiple implementations of these things, with separate configuration files, in the same distribution. [HEADS UP] F33 Boost 1.73.0 rebuilds starting in a side tag

I'm starting the rebuilds for Boost 1.73.0 and packages that depend on it, using the f33-boost side tag. If you see "Rebuilt for Boost 1.73.0" in the changelog for one of your packages, please do not make another update. Instead co-ordinate with me to use the side tag for your update (if your package also depends on Python then also talk to Miro Hrončok). If your package depends on Boost and you don't see "Rebuilt for Boost 1.73.0" in the %changelog yet, it might be worth checking with me anyway, as I'll probably be starting it soon. The new Boost will include the following changes: - rename boost-jam package to boost-b2, and /usr/bin/bjam with /usr/bin/b2 (it looks nothing in Fedora uses this anyway) - obsolete the separate boost-nowide package, as Boost 1.73.0 includes the Boost.Nowide library now jhogarth, please confirm you're aware of the nowide change. The existing boost-nowide package will need to be retired in rawhide. New changes already in rawhide: - boost-python3-devel subpackage removed, those files are provided by boost-devel now. - Boost libraries no longer link to libpython. Thanks for your help.

Supporting hibernation in Workstation ed., draft 1

Hi, Fedora Workstation working group has been investigating the working state of hibernation (suspend to disk) for about four months, and has produced a draft status report on the findings so far. Present status, impediments to support, and importantly, the specifics of how to address those impediments, are described. This is a draft, to reflect on-going work in this area. It's intended to be short and consumable. Suggestions welcome. I include the synopsis below for better visibility and list search. https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/blob/master/f/hibernationstatus.md --- Synopsis: The Fedora Workstation working group recognizes hibernation can be useful, but due to impediments it's currently not practical to support it. This is a recognition of the current state of affairs, but the working group wishes hibernation could be relied upon, and thinks there is a viable approach for limited support of hibernation in the future. We encourage interested parties to pursue the needed improvements. In the meantime, given that hibernation isn't currently viable, the workstation WG decides that technical decisions will not be constrained by it. Decisions about Workstation's 'out of the box' configuration might conflict with the requirements of hibernation. There are desired enhancements to performance and security that are hindered by the status quo. The working group will re-evaluate when the significant impediments have been adequately addressed. We will support an install time means of enabling hibernation retained via Custom partitioning. If the user chooses to create a swap partition, the installer will include a resume=UUID kernel parameter hint so that the kernel can find the hibernation image. -- Chris Murphy
