Is anyone using greenwave 'decision update' fedora-messaging messages?

Hi folks! So, greenwave publishes these 'decision.update' messages: https://apps.fedoraproject.org/datagrepper/id?id=2022-04ed73bc-25ca-4dfc-... Up until relatively recently, they were used by Bodhi to update gating status for updates. But I figured that was a bad design for various reasons, and changed Bodhi to do it differently[0]. I'm not aware of anything else that uses these messages, I think they're bad design, and I'd like to submit a greenwave PR to remove all the code that's used to produce them (it would substantially simplify greenwave). But before doing that, it seems a good idea to ask if anyone's aware of anything else that uses them. I believe Kevin told me no native fedora-messaging consumers seem to be subscribed to that topic, but it is possible something could be consuming them via the fedmsg bridge. Thanks folks! About how Go is updated in Fedora

I've been thinking a little about how Go is updated in Fedora. I would like to hear other opinions about the current state of the releases and improve it. This is not related to the Fedora proposal that I'm planning to submit today regarding the update of Go. I do not pretend to change anything for the next Fedora release, but at least have an idea of if what we are doing right now can be improved. The current state: Each Fedora release has a major release of Go available. For example, Fedora 33 had 1.15, and Fedora 34 had 1.16. The problem: I see two main issues with this approach. 1. Both Go and Fedora have release cycles of 6 months, so the schedule is a little tight. Go releases can be delayed and have issues in the mass rebuild phase. 2. A user needs to wait for the next Fedora release to get a new major version of Go. So consequentially, they will tend to download from upstream, making the Go package just necessary for dependencies but with little use on its own. Also, backport bugs to Fedora releases might be a problem. Releasing packages that depend on new features are an issue too [0]. What I think is an improvement: Suppose a new Go major version is released in the middle of a Fedora life cycle. In that case, I think it is an improvement for the user to be able to update to the following Go release. A hypothetical new release cycle would look like this: - Fedora N release follows Go upstream as close as we can. - Fedora N-1 sticks with the latest major version of Go that was available on it until the release of Fedora N. Another hypothetical approach could be using modules with each upstream supported release in a stream. To help in the decision, I made a report tool/web page [1] that shows the current state of the packages that depend on Go (Thanks to the COPR API). It compares the builds of every single Go dependent package in Fedora 35 using the current available Go package with the same list of Go packages but using the Go package is available on Fedora Rawhide. To rephrase it, it compares Fedora 35 packages built with Go 1.16 with Fedora 35 packages built with Go 1.17. As you can see, right now, from the 1901 packages that depend on Go, 196 have some sort of change and 1705 built exactly the same. You can search for "Same results" or "Something has changed" to see this. Or by the name of the package. The report is not smart enough to say what happened right now so some "issues" are in fact improvements like golang-github-cactus-statsd-client, others like golang-github-briandowns-spinner are real issues. My idea is to improve this report with your suggestions. Hence, if a new Go major release is available, we can confidently say that the package can be updated in the middle of a Fedora release. Upgrade to Django 4.0.x for F36

Hey there, would it be too late to upgrade Django for Fedora 36 to version 4.0.x? It may require some more package updates, not just Django itself. The releasenotes are here[1], We have version 3.2 in Fedora 35, which is a long-term supported release (until 2024)[2]. Unfortunately, I am not able to answer the question of "what would break?". However, not shipping a newer release would show Fedora as outdated software. As hinted in the previous paragraph, I am not involved in any development connected to Django for some time now. This is a cry for help. The whole Django stack in Fedora could use more helping hands. Upstream is very good at providing insights, timelines etc and also keeps it secured. That also means, there are regular updates. Mic recording issues from browsers

Greetings! I've been banging my head against this wall for a while now, and would really appreciate some pointers. I can no longer record Google Meet meetings using RecordRTC (https://www.webrtc-experiment.com/RecordRTC/). This promptly became a problem once I upgraded from F33 to F35. I'm fairly certain this has therefore something to do with PipeWire. The problem occurs on every browser I've tried, including Chrome and Firefox. The symptoms is that though my audio comes through clearly to other meeting participants, my recording of my own voice is at the minimum chopped off, and at worst is mostly silence with occasional blips of syllable fragments. The audio coming from other participants is recorded correctly. I can see that once RecordRTC starts recording, the browser opens another recording channel to the Pulse socket (which is serviced by PW, but all these browsers only speak Pulse). I assume that the data sent over this second recording channel is mangled. Now, both PA and PW support parallel recording from the same source. I've observed: * Recording a stream by another application (parec, vokoscreenNG) during an ongoing meeting is fine * Simply recording two streams in parallel from the same application works fine, the recorded data is identical. This is with both using "simple" API (https://pastebin.com/vTVzQgpX), or multiple connections per context (https://pastebin.com/EEX99VDJ). I'd like to understand how to dig deeper into this. There are a couple of things that would help: 1. What's an "easy" way to trace an application, and save the output of any data that passes through a FD? Besides using strace, and then converting the relevant lines into binaries using some script. 2. What is a good way to get details about connections between an app and PA socket? I've been relying on 'pactl list` and whatever KDE settings show about the connections. But 'pactl' shows clients, not streams, and I can't see any streams or their characteristics. There are a lot of configuration options on PA streams. 3. Has anybody else seen this? I'd like to find out if it's a known problem, before I bury myself in Chromium/FF sources to see if I can get a better handle on where this turns south. 4. Any clues what can this be related to? Considering that multi-channel recording generally works fine, are there flags/settings that maybe meddle with the priority, forces buffers being shared or cleaned up, attempts to acquire an exclusive recording? Also, as per SPDX License List expression syntax (found in an > appendix to the SPDX spec), you have to have a valid license ID on the > left side of the WITH operator and a valid exception ID on the right > side (as one would expect) In related internal work being done largely by Bryan Sutula and Russell Gelvin on certain Red Hat products, there's been an effort to review for approval exceptions (what SPDX would consider exceptions) identified mainly through ScanCode Toolkit. I believe a given exception text will be approved basically without regard to the license it is associated with. If you look at the current Fedora good list, the impression is that there are a small number of uses of exceptions out there used with particular licenses (I think in all cases, licenses in the GPL family). But as Bryan and Russell have been finding, the actual picture is much bigger and more complex. I am pretty sure I've seen cases where an exception normally used with GPL version 2 is used with LGPL version 2.x. This reminds me that not too long ago I suggested that Fedora abandon any effort to note the existence of (permissive) exceptions in license tags, as being too much work for dubious gain beyond classification for the sake of classification. But the anticipated switch to SPDX identifiers raises the issue of what the license tag is actually *for*, and how much detail or specificity it ought to embody, since SPDX identifiers permit and in a sense encourage a relatively high level of detail of license description. That's a whole other topic but something I think has to be addressed as well. We might be assuming now that license tags ought to have as much detail as possible (something akin to a human review of the output of a scanner like ScanCode Toolkit on the files in a source tarball, with only limited processing); this isn't the approach consistently taken by Fedora packagers today.
