I have a 1280×1024 LCD and I think subpixel rendering looks a lot sharper
than grayscale one. I cannot notice issues such as:

Can the sub pixel renderer actually know the actual subpixels on the screen or is some pattern just assumed?

here, and I don't see how that is related to using subpixel rendering. That
sounds more like a hinting issue.
