If we're being honest, a typical 2005-era laptop is going to yield a
rather lousy experience with any modern Linux Desktop. (And an even
lousier experience with modern Windows!)

For about 50 dollars/pounds/euros, you can transform a 10 year old machine
into something that'll be decently usable.
