This often means, extensions will install but not work

Even if some percentage of extension works. what is the harm not doing it.

Shutdown should be fast enough to not need it

My machine takes 5 second to shutdown with default installation. Does that count slow or fast ?

With LVM, you need a separate boot partition anyway and you can continue
having it as Ext3. There is a GRUB patch but it hasn't been integrated yet.
