This is no longer the case, by the way. GitLab has recently made it easier to
add plugins, with the new method not requiring patching the source tree.
Even before that change, webhook integrations + API calls were fairly powerful
in GitLab.
I'm aware of those and the capabilities implied. Unfortunately, this
is very difficult to manage with GitLab Omnibus based deployments, and
there are other caveats and restrictions that make this not as usable
as it looks at first glace. And everyone I've talked to indicates that
the a from-source deployment is a recipe for insanity, so I'm not even
going to go there.
