Help on reproducing potential yum bug

I have seen several complaints about the above issue but it seems Yum 
developers havent been able to reproduce it. My system that I had this 
issue on myself has been replaced with FC5 running a devel version of 
Yum where I havent been able to reproduce it.

I have had this happen to me several times. I don't see why the
developers haven't been able to reproduce it, since it's clearly in
the source code (__init__.py). Perhaps this problem does not exist in
the devel version you are using. Code shown below is from
yum-2.6.1-0.fc5. The bug reporter was using yum-2.6.0-1.

In other words, any successful transaction calls cleanPackages and
cleanHeaders, which in turn unlink every file in the 'pkgdir's and
'hdrdir's respectively.

The bug report is not about successful transcations (ie) package being 
installed, cleaning the cache which is expected behavior with 
keepcache=0. The problem is with unsuccesful ones cleaning out the 
cache. An example would be yum failing on file conflicts and removing 
the packages from cache while it shouldnt.

Perhaps you misread the bug report. It says that after an error yum
keeps the cache, but then when performing a subsequent successful
operation (ie just upgrading a single package) all the packages and
headers (not just from that single package) are deleted.

This indeed describes a slightly different problem which is described

Ah. I didnt explain that right. The problem I was trying to reproduce is 
better described in the above bug report. My original mail refers to a 
slightly different issue.

Yes, making the cleaning on success a little more fine-grained is on my
todo list both for FC6 final and then also to backport to yum 2.6.x.
But as Rahul said, there are also apparently cases where even a
non-successful case is removing things -- or at least, that's what has
been reported :-)

the finer-grained addition is some pretty straightforward code.

If anyone would like to help out with yum development that's an easy way
to get  your feet wet.
