The *f45-backgrounds* package [1] is now available in Rawhide, ready for the Fedora 45 release.
One of the most notable changes is that the *“Time of Day”* animated wallpaper has been split out of the GNOME and MATE background packages into dedicated sub-packages:
*
*f45-backgrounds-gnome-time-of-day*
*
*f45-backgrounds-mate-time-of-day*
This change provides a cleaner and more consistent wallpaper selection experience in the *Appearance* section of Fedora Workstation and its derivatives, while making the optional animated wallpapers available only to users who want them. To enable the feature, simply install the appropriate *Time of Day* package for your desktop environment.
Additionally, as a reminder, the default Fedora 45 wallpaper includes *wide-gamut color support*, delivering richer and more accurate colors on displays that support wide color gamuts.

This appears to be broken. KDE wallpaper is now solid grey, and journal shows:

Agh, I was going to ask you to let me test new builds as a scratch build before pushing. The problem is this package isn't on the critical path list so it's not gated; if it breaks the openQA tests it will break them for every subsequent update and the only fix is to request releng to untag it again.
I'll force the tests to run on it and see if it's fixed all the problems, if not we'll have to untag it again.

Oh wait, never mind, you sent an f45-backgrounds build so it's OK. We untagged desktop-backgrounds which has the effect of making f45- backgrounds unimportant.
I'll force a test of the untagged desktop-backgrounds together with this new f45-backgrounds and we'll see what happens. If it's good I can ask for desktop-backgrounds to be retagged.

KDE still cannot load this. We still get blank grey backgrounds. In the journal, I see:
Jul 23 13:44:07 fedora plasma-login-wallpaper[2636]: The PlasmaWindowManagement protocol hasn't activated in time. The client possibly got denied by kwin? Check kwin output. Jul 23 13:44:07 fedora plasma-login-wallpaper[2636]: Unexpected event 1 instead of JXL_DEC_FULL_IMAGE Jul 23 13:44:07 fedora plasma-login-wallpaper[2636]: Unexpected event 1 instead of JXL_DEC_FULL_IMAGE
Those "Unexpected event 1 instead of JXL_DEC_FULL_IMAGE" messages seem to show up multiple times, every time anything (plasma-login-manager or the desktop) attempts to load the wallpaper. There are 8 instances of that message total.

It looks like a bug related to Plasma. On a fresh installed Fedora KDE Plasma 44 inside GNOME Boxes, the F45 wallpaper with embedded Display P3 colour profile runs fine as expected before update. The issue showing a grey background occurred after update to Plasma 6.7. A possible theory is the regression on Plasma support of embedded colour profile in JXL.
jxlinfo showed "Color space: RGB, D65, P3 primaries, sRGB transfer function, rendering intent: Perceptual"
Fedora Workstation is unaffected to the issue.

It turned out KDE Plasma will fail to properly render a lossy JPEG XL wallpaper with an embedded color profile.
For the test, I shrank the wallpaper to a reasonable 5120 × 5120 size and convert the PNG to lossless JPEG XL format via "cjxl -e 1 -d 0" command. According to the test run on GNOME Boxed F44 KDE edition, the wallpaper renders as expected. The loading time should be smaller for low powered devices despite a 10+ Mib size.

It looks like the wallpapers is too big i.e. 12800x12800. I will shrink it to 8K format for the next update.
