We had to make cuts to the DVD for space reasons at beta. Why are we adding
a new environment now to the DVD when we're trying to spin RCs? What's the
blocker bug?

QA requested it, it was actually in TC6, it added ~1mb most everything
was already on the DVD.

It doesn't actually add any extra packages, they're all on the DVD
already. It just makes the 'basic desktop' option available on the
package selection screen on DVD installs, which some people like to
have.
I'm also not a fan of changes during freeze, but this one at least seems
to have worked out fine.

It doesn't actually add any extra packages, they're all on the DVD

Looks like it adds awesome, dwm, ratpoison, xmonad-basic (and any
dependencies not already covered) to the media, and adds another install
choice that is not covered by release criteria to the DVD (albeit one that's
already on the net install.)

We have not, in fact, built a spin-kickstarts that matches Final RC1 or
RC2 yet anyway. The last build was 2013-05-24.
I have it on my release checklist to ensure a matching spin-kickstarts
is *built*, but I've never considered it required to go into the frozen
package set at the point of building the RCs. AFAIK it's always been OK
to get it done once we declare an RC as gold, so we know what
spin-kickstarts state to build exactly.

One way it could be implemented is for rel-eng to make their own local
branch of spin-kicktarts and cherry-pick appropriate commits from the
spin-kickstarts repo for the branch.
A new spin-kickstarts package could be built using a diff of this
branch versus the source tar ball of the stable spin-kickstarts package
as a patch.
The build process for this could be automated so that a new spin-kickstarts
update could be ready for testing in a short amount of time.

issue might have been that the src rpms for updates might go away when
the update goes away. So that if spin-kickstarts got updated a second
time after the release, the source used to build the release might not
be available. (At least easily. I think it wouldn't be too much work
to go back and figure it out if someone really wanted the exact source
used for a release.)

We can, yeah. We don't have to close the 'distro' repo at the exact
moment we sign off on the release.
