What applications do people use?

Those who were at the Mugshot presentation at Fudcon may remember the
mockups we presented around browsing applications based on popularity.
You can now find an initial implementation at:
 
   http://mugshot.org/applications

While we don't have much data yet, you can already see some interesting
trends.

If you're interested, sign up for Mugshot and add your own statistics.
Once you activate your account, you'll need to enable statistics
tracking from your account page or from the applications page. (You
may also want to join the Mugshot Fedora group
http://mugshot.org/group?who=qF6wdtBPcy3D8T.)

What other information would you like to see there as a Fedora package
maintainer? Do you see something built on this as useful for Fedora
users? Let us know.

PS. A few caveats to keep in mind when browsing the data:

 - It's still a very small amount of data; this is about 80 people
   contributing statistics over 4 days.

 - Various applications are missing because they have unusual 
   WM class names; in particular most gtk# applications are not
   getting properly matched. I'll be fixing these cases up as
   I find them.

 - Because of some bugs I didn't find until today, applications 
   used by KDE users are under-represented. (Application data
   uploads with konsole in them triggered an exception)
 
 - I've started some work at allowing editing the data through
   the web interface, but for now, all the editing is with the
   command line tools I used to build the initial contents based
   on Fedora RPMS and is admin-only.

I take it mugshot won't work with current FC7 builds, in which it looks
like it depends currently on libcurl.so.3 , in which FC7 has .4.

uhm... smolt would need to be drastically redesigned to make that
possible. Since application use is a per-user statistic, and smolt is
designed for per operating system stats which does not leak personal
information. I'm pretty sure its a bad idea to have smolt track per
user activity. I have no problem with smolt being available by default
as an opt-in service at install time, if its only tracking hardware
information. I'd have a pretty serious problem with it being a default
opt-in service that tracked individual user activity.

If you don't want to sign up to mugshot, don't. But since this
'service' is tracking individual users, then it definitely need to be
a 'service' that individual users MUST register for to participate. As
an admin for multi-users systems, I will fight you tooth and nail to
keep this sort of 'service' as a per-user registration required opt-in
entity.

Any reason mugshot client isn't in Fedora Extras? Seems a bit odd to
me, considering it's free software, and needs to be updated fairly
frequently, and built by a company that understands free software. :-)

You are heard.  Loud and clear.  Can't do more at this moment than
promise, "We're working on it."

In the meantime, all these disparate services are out there, standing
alone, for those who want to be on that curve.

Certainly if the goal was just collecting application statistics, doing
it with the Mugshot client is probably overkill.

But the global application-statistics tracking is really just a
side-effect of larger things we are trying to do with Mugshot / client
interaction; just in the area of application browsing and launching
we are thinking about features like:

 - Automatically have launchers for a user's most frequently launched
   applications; even when they first create an account on a computer.
 - Synchronize application launching preferences among multiple
   computers.
 - Show you what applications are used among your friends (maybe... not
   sure if this is interesting yet or not)
 - Have the ability to comment on applications or recommend alternate
   applications.

Many of these only make sense in the context of an account.

We've tried to keep Mugshot signup as lightweight as possible ... for
example, the default sign-in is *only* by emailed link; we don't ask you
to set a password as part of the initial setup, though you have the
option of doing that later if you want.

There is also some possibility of some sort of single sign-on between
Mugshot and the Fedora services like the wiki or the account system,
possibly using OpenID.

+1

OpenID seems to be the convergence point.  We have other online stuff
that need to integrate with Fedora, Mugshot, etc., and OpenID gives us a
path to make a great user experience.
