A new utility "System Control Center (system-config-control)" !

Hi all,

I have tried to make one utility called
"system-config-control" for Fedora. Downloads (RPM,
SRPM, zipped source) and Snapshots are awailable on
http://www.indianoss.org . Right now it's available in
only one language (Gujarati-India).

It looks like a good idea indeed although it needs some UI work - I'd
like to see this in a form of a tree rather than tabs - but that's my
own personal taste.
However a very quick improvement that could be done is that
system-config-control will ask for a root password and all the other
utilities won't - that might simplify things for the end user.
I didn't have the time to go into the source code, but a question that
rises is - how modular is that utility? if we have a new system-config
utility - how much will we have to work in order to configure it to work
with system-config-control? 
Perhaps we would also like to first probe which system-config utilities
are installed and then let the user choose only between them? - The end
user might be frightened to see a kickstart icon without knowing what is
it at all...

Otherwise - keep up the good work - as I previously said - it's a good
idea.

Just add one button in the used glade file and give it
a name which the actual command uses to run that
utility.

Just checked it out and a few comments. Looks like you are trying to 
provide a centralized control panel which is a approach worth trying 
out. You could rename the tool as system-config-controlpanel(/center)  
to make this more obvious.  The categorization of tabs could be 
improved. An icon list (Similar to Korganiser for example) instead of 
tabs might be worth trying out as a mock up. A icon view can be provided 
as a alternative.  The buttons needs to be spaced better. 
System-config-logviewer is no longer including FC4 and above. Gnome 
utils includes a logviewer which has been enabled in the development 
tree instead.

Disable the buttons if the particular tools are not available. When 
system-config-packages is rewritten on top of yum to understand 
repositories it would be quite useful to call that with the appropriate 
options to install the tools on demand. I would suggest including this 
in Fedora Extras and propose them for core later if its found to be 
useful and after the rest of the UI interactions and other wrinkles are 
sorted out. Might consider getting the help of the design team for that

I have considered such an app before, but haven't had the time or drive to
do it myself. I am not currently on a machine I would like to compile too
many programs on, so do you have any screenshots, and what language did you
code this in?

Screenshots are already available on the "MyAlbum"
section of the http://www.indianoss.org/

And i have used Python + Glade to make this utility.

I wonder - what does this offer that gnome-system-tools doesn't?

I also idley wonder why Fedora sticks with system-config-* rather than 
gnome-system-tools and friends, given the push for upstream 
compatibilitiy, but that's another thread :).

This tool attempts to provide a centralized collection of the existing 
system config tools in Fedora. You are free to package 
gnome-system-tools in Fedora Extras repository. There are feature 
differences between the set of tools. The current set of tools in core 
are better integrated with what Fedora wants to provide on the whole. 
SELinux or LVM functionality for example

In the longer run, we might want to merge these features but things like 
SELinux are Linux specific obviously and gnome-system-tools supports 
other operating systems too so there is likely to be differences.
