Hi there,
Maybe I still don't get how upstream works, but I found that the latest
thinkpad-acpi version is 0.19, still Fedora's latest kernel has

Its built as an in-kernel module so 2.6.23 == 0.16, 2.6.24 == 0.17 and
I guess 2.6.25 == 0.19.

And if there's a particular problem with thinkpad-acpi you're encountering
that is fixed by a later version, file a bug where you describe the problem,
point to the fix, etc, and someone might be willing to backport the fix to the
latest released kernel. I might even be willing to give it a go as a newly
minted member of the ThinkPad community... (just got a T61)

Maybe you're in the same condition as I am (Also T61 user, great
machine)... Can't make the volume
up/down keys to work, and I can't change the volume through
/proc/acpi/ibm/volume. I'll se if this is solved in the thinkpad-acpi
changelog and file a bug...

Ah yes, mine has the same issue with 2.6.23.12 right now, forgot about that.
Heck, *I* should have filed a bug already... But I'll let you. :)

Also, the brightness keys don't do anything on mine, though that may be
resolved in rawhide via xbacklight, iirc. Rawhide was a bit too explodey for
me to want to upgrade to it just yet though.

Intel X3100 graphics, 1680x1050 display, intel video driver.

Yep, though I did have to add my model # to the proper hal quirks file. Prior
to that, it would often resume to a black screen (though I could get a console
back via ctrl-alt-f1 then alt-f7 and X would be back). Now, its flawless, and
gets me straight to the gnome unlock dialog within a few seconds. Still not
nearly as fast as Mac OS X resumes on my 3 year old PowerBook G4, but still
pretty damned good.

On my ThinkPad T61 with Intel graphics, 1680x1050 display, my 
brightness keys cause the brightness on-screen display bar graph to 
appear, but the brightness doesn't actually change until I hit the 
very top of the scale, then it goes bright immediately.  It also 
reacts very slowly to each key stroke.

That's very strange, as the conventional wisdom is that the suspend
issues are nVidia related.

If you don't mind my quizzing you a bit...

- Are you suspending to RAM or hibernating to disk?  If you're using
GNOME, what options do you see if you left-click the battery/AC icon?
How are you actually suspending?

- What driver for the video card?

Brightness control works for me with the vesa driver and the latest
nVidia binary driver (169.04 or later), but not earlier ones.

The nv driver doesn't work at all, but there is an update in the queue
that should work.

- What kernel, and what is the exact model number of your T61?  Could
you post or send me the results of lsmod, lshal, and lspci -v ?  Could
you check the BIOS version?

I have almost the same laptop as you (T61p), and I have the same
problem with the volume keys, but the brightness keys work just fine.
However, I have tainted my computer with the proprietary driver from
Nvidia, if that makes any difference...

Yep. We're already targeting kernel 2.6.25 for F9, so you'll get that for 
free. :)

(Or did you mean additional patches that aren't yet in or going into Linus' 
tree?)

OK Can't help you there.  For the nVidia cards, the latest binary driver
fixes the brightness button issue.  Buttons also work with the vesa
driver, but the nv driver *still* doesn't work at all

There are a couple of things to note about these features:
  - the rawhide kernel has bits to suspend/resume intel video devices (should
    be faster than using vbetool)
  - newer versions of the intel driver (2.2+) have a more sophisticated
    backlight control system, see the man page for more details.  it should
    work with the thinkpad_acpi driver via the /sys/class/backlight interface

Apologies if this is a silly question, but which Rawhide package
contains xbacklight? I just did a yum search and it came up blank. I
just compiled it by hand on F8 and it works fine.

Like several others on this thread, the brightness controls do nothing
on F8, and I've been getting barely three hours with the extended
7-cell battery on a 14" 1280x800 with Intel graphics -- going to jump
to F9 alpha once that comes out.

My suspend problems are almost identical to Matthew Saltzman's; I'd
roll my own kernel if I have the time to experiment with different
settings.

For the spontaneous-resume-from-suspend issue, there turns out to be a
workaround:

For the power issues, make sure you have BIOS 1.22-1.06 or later.
Battery life is still not great, but it is supposed to be better than
earlier BIOSes

Still can't resume from hibernate with the nVidia binary driver.  nv
driver still has issues (see another thread about that).  vesa driver
mostly works, except that the backlight never goes off.
