Hi Folks,
I've been involved in many aspects of the Mandrake Linux evolution and done
many great things there. Lately I feel the focus has changed to the worse,
and I'm not happy about it. What can you say to convince me to join this
community?

Mandrake=mdk
My interests are non gui applications, server and security applications
mainly. The mdk focus seems to be rather ship a game than a nice server
application, I simply hate games. I'm maintaining hundreds of mdk packages in
contribs and maybe up to 10 in main. I'm the one responsible for mdk to have
a total of 113 apache2 modules, this has taken me about 1,5 years. I do not
write code at all nor am I a unix guru, but I usually find a way to solve
problems anyhow, if I can't fix it I ask for help, I give credit, I fix it,
simple. I'm nearing 40yo. I'm a doer.

I recently started to look into IDN (International domain names) for mdk and
patched glibc with libidn support and also patched bind with idnkit support
(I got no responce from mdk, but everyone could be on vacation...). This
basically means this is a start towards IDN, not the solution as all
applications using gethostby* needs to be patched (for example ping) to
support IDN. Bind on the other hand, well actually host, nslookup and dig can
do IDN. I believe any name server can do IDN. KDE 3.2.x will have support for
IDN using libidn, or possibly a patched glibc. Mozilla 1.4 supports IDN.
Sweden (where I live, well to be specific I live in a small town named
"Jokkmokk" way up in the north.) is the first country in Europe to implement
IDN on the top level TLD dot SE. Read about it here:

I have been doing (OpenSource) research for a long time and have fiddled a lot
with rpm packages, maybe for five years now. I like this.

Does libidn manage to avoid all the US patent issues ?
I don't know, I wasn't aware of any patents regarding this.

I've done that. There was consensus in the IETF IDN working group that
Walid's patents are invalid, especially since there existed published
and widely-distributed prior art (Martin Duerst's UTF-5, to name).
There is no patent issue, as far as IETF and the lawyers members have
contacted agree. And BTW, Mozilla already supports IDN.

The impression I've got from the people I've talked to is that there is no
problem with this.
For one thing..., the Swedish TLD dot SE would probably not roll out this if
there were patent issues.

Really, I think this is just a misunderstanding. I absolutely cannot
interpret Jared's post as hostile in any way. Quite the opposite
actually. He'll probably come forward himself and explain...just read

Not sure what kind of reply you did expect. Your posting was three
lines short and the only question was strange. You could have expanded
a bit on what you don't like about Mandrake Linux's focus or what
visions you have. Or you could have commented on specific portions of

archives of these lists to see what has gone before.
The whole fedora thing is still in a state of flux and Red Hat (and others)
are trying to figure out how to do things ... how to handling packages in
Alternatives, in Extras, in Legacy, etc ... just what is Legacy and how will
it fit/work with the Fedora Core ... does Lagacy include old (unsupported)
releases of Red Hat Linux ... etc., etc.

I can speak to some of the Legacy issues. We're aiming for supporting
7.3 this December, 9 in April, FC 1 when it goes EOL, etc.. There may
be some interest in older than 7.3 support, not sure how much will make
it in though. Thats up to the community, those actually doing the
backports.

Aha, I see. Seems cool. I'm used to how this works in Mandrake as I'm involved
with maintaining some core packages and many contribs packages. I hope the
infrastructure will be worked out soon and guide lines will be written, etc.

you believe that you deserve to be scouted? What skills or experience
do you have that we should honour?
