Hello All!
After upgrading from F7 to F8 I found that someone imposes his own
evil wil on me and I was forced to install another bunch of useless
software - namely metacity and nodoka-metacity-theme. I am a user of
good old FVWM and don't understand why I can't remove metacity
completely (as I could do in F7).

So we have there three somewhat questionable dependences on metacity or
nodoka-metacity-theme. Which one of these causes the problem for you?

I just want to remove metacity because it's not required for my system
- nodoka-metacity-theme prevents me from removing metacity so I want
to remove it too but this one is tolerable. It costs only some
kilobytes in comparison with 11 megabytes of
*simple* *window manager, metacity.

default theme for metacity, so it needs metacity to be installed, but if
you do not want to use metacity it should be save to remove. It will
remove fedora-gnome-theme as well, but this dependency also OK. When you
do "yum remove metacity" which package appears in the list of packages
to remove that you don't want to remove?

The window manager is useful without that particular theme if it has an
alternative to default to. If that particular theme is useful only to that
window manager, then the theme *should* require the window manager.

The window manager is useful without that particular theme if it has an
alternative to default to. If that particular theme is useful only to that
window manager, then the theme *should* require the window manager.
In that case it is also useful to other things since the fedora theme
and a gnome theme depend on it.

s-c-d requires metacity because it requires a window manager for the
case where it launches its own X server, and metacity is the standard
gtk window manager. Likewise, firstboot modules may create their own X
windows, and you need a window manager around to get the focus right.
We could depend on gnome-wm instead, but that isn't likely to make
anyone happier than just requiring metacity. Or we could require miniwm
from anaconda, which isn't actually a terrible idea, but you'd have to
change the anaconda packaging first because you probably don't want to
drag in all of anaconda at runtime.

Only if someone else is willing to own mini-wm :-) It has some ...
"interesting" focus behaviors from time to time. With only one app
running, the effect is minimized but they still pop up from time to time
and lead to some fun.

and occasionally look at the bugs for the subpackage. And I'm happy to
tell people that it's not a real wm.

Why not use matchbox-window-manager? It is already in koji for use in
olpc and works great for full-screen single windows.
It seems to not exist in the F-8 or devel branches in cvs? Weird. (It
exists, there's just no specfile.)
If we do that I'd prefer to see matchbox used in anaconda as well and
mini-wm destroyed entirely. The fewer window managers the better, and
the less code in anaconda proper the better.
