Hi guys,
It tooks me few hours as this is my first python script :)
I've managed to get the whole list of transifex.net projects who appears
dead, here they are:
(see bellow for the explaination)

The script is available on my repo[1], the code is explained in the
README file.
[O] means no owner specified, __THAT'S REALLY WRONG__
[M] means no maintainers found (default ones removed, could they be the
only ones? Need to check)
[D] means the source language has not been updated for a long time (set
to 4 months). It is against all resources on one project. 4 months is
quite revelent.

I've run this script against all Fedora projects (86), which are under
websites, docs, main and uptream.
The [D] date is checked against all resources of one project (total of
400 resources)

They have probably not done all necessary steps:

But I am not sure if anyone take care of them in order to help growing
our community.
IMHO this is FLSCo related, we should probably handle new election after
the next release to refresh things. (Last election was on 2008).

BTW, Aeolus Image Warehouse had to dump Transifex. It was impossible
to build anything without having an account there, and that was
unacceptable, if we ever wanted contributions.

I deliberately switched iwhd from transifex to http://translationproject.org
because the latter provides anonymous rsync access, while transifex requires
that one register and use an account merely to download translations:

If you're used to version-controlling your project's .po files, you may
not see the point, since then, downloading .po files is usually done only
by the maintainer. However, if you do not VC the .po files, but rather
pull them via a bootstrap script, as done by upstream coreutils, grep,
diffutils, parted, etc., then everyone who builds from a just-cloned
directory must download the .po files. I don't want to impose the
burden of registering on those folks.

Thanks for letting us known, I'll ask for this project to be removed
from transifex.net.
The problem that I see is that the translators that have spent time
translating it has just seen their project removed, and an other guy is
able to continue translating. While some translators are expert, some
other just don't take enough time to get quality. I would have been
really desapointed in that case.
The translationproject.org is great, but you have one to many files
assigned to one translators (and not one to many translators in one
file), and you NEED to sign the Disclaimer with the FSF…
I am still waiting for them to let me translate… If the make project
would have been in transifex, I would have corrected (lot of) typo by
December. I still not have acces while the assigned translator is not
responding.

Yes I understand. You could probably ship pos without tracking them on
the history as other projects do (yum I think).
Hope to see the authentification removed soon (yeah your ticket is old
now…).

For all my projects I stopped accepting Tx data when they stopped
providing properly attributed git commits, and started to supply us with
all translation updates in a single commit instead. We need (and in fact
every Open Source project should require) proper attribution for the
patches we merge into our projects, and that means that commits are
properly split up. As long as they aren't I will not turn on again Tx
for any of my projects, neither the ones listed above, nor the new stuff
we have been working on, such as systemd.
I have not been following development of Tx closely, so maybe there's
now some toolset available to convert the combined translation updates
as individual git commits. Is there?
I mean, I totally like the idea of Tx, I just dont think that the
"all-updates-in-one-commit" strategy can ever work for Open Source
projects, and hence we are not using it.

I agree with you, which is why we took a different approach for anaconda.
When we moved anaconda to Transifex, we stopped storing the .po files in
the anaconda git repository. All we store in the template (the .pot file).
So we treat anaconda and anaconda translations as two separate projects
with separate upstream repositories. A release consists of the anaconda
project plus the .po files from the appropriate branch in Transifex for
the project. The translators are then free to use whatever process they
want, so long as we ensure the .pot file is up to date in Transifx (which
we do, it's part of our release process).
It's not perfect and won't work for every project. And it has the added
problem that Jim Meyering pointed out in that people will have to register
to pull the .po files, *but* you don't actually need the .po files if you
just want to hack on the code. So it works for us.

Hey Lennart,
I feel commits are not the best way to handle neither translation nor
attribution for a number of reasons.
The attribution issue was fixed in the following way: Transifex
remembers every single translation and adds the copyright information
in the PO file header itself, which is probably the optimal way to
give attribution. You can use this information in your release notes.
If needed, we can provide an API call to provide you with this
information too.

There hasn't been a high enough demand for this to sit down and
develop it. There's a quite rich API available and a git-like client
which can be tweaked to produce git-like commits.

Those two projects are still using Transifex, it's just that they
haven't had an update in a while. I'm curious why 4 months is so
important, since the messages in those projects change even less
frequently than the projects themselves.

This list was at first written to show which projects do not have any
maintainers (i.e. devel could not pull/push translations).
I've added a 4 months check to have an idea, we need to check them all.
Lots of projects was uploaded Tue Mar 22 2011 under transifex.net, and
many have not updated their files since then. 2 cases:
- the project is not using transifex, we need to remove it.
- the project does not have any new strings. In that case we need to
check if the project is correctly set up and if devels are able to
pull translations.
