Hey folks, I'm updating ffmpeg from 8.1 to 9.0 in Rawhide.
I've rebuilt all dependent packages in my COPR and opened PRs where necessary. Despite the SONAME bump and dropping some deprecated audio APIs, I encountered only ~10 build failures, all of which have been addressed.

I'm going to land the update in Fedora rawhide next week, when Firefox 155 is scheduled to be released, because that's the version that includes support for FFmpeg 9. I will also merge any unmerged PRs then and announce the side-tag name.

I'm planning to rebuild all affected packages in a side tag and I'm going to use my provenpackager access for that.
Is that a problem for your package?

I have trouble understanding the reason to wait for firefox, it dlopen ffmpeg, does it matter if firefox doesn't have video support for a week? There are at least 12 high rated CVE's filed against ffmpeg-8.1.2.

The simplest reason is that SONAME bumps need to be announced at least a week in advance.
Your assistance in fixing the ~10 build failures I mentioned in the original mail has been very useful, so I'd like to thank you here as well.

As far as I can tell, the RPM Fusion's x264 package is the only consumer. You've patched that already.

As far as I can tell, the RPM Fusion's x264 package is the only consumer. You've patched that already.
I've filed an issue with upstream about that: https://github.com/gpac/gpac/issues/3880
And upstream fixed it immediately. I'm backporting the fix to our gpac package, so the work-around in x264 is no longer required.
I like gpac upstream. :)

AFAICT, it is using `ffmpeg` executable, mostly for tests. It is just `Suggest` for runtime. So it does not need rebuild. It will be just unnecessary churn. That is all.
If it is easier to build it than skip it, that is also fine.

If this was issue for rubygem-activestorage (and previously was [1]), such fix typically can be applied even before the SONAME bump lands.

Beta freeze starts tomorrow, so if you want it in f45, it'd be good to request a freeze exception first so the rebuild update doesn't get stuck in Bodhi and create conflicts when the freeze is lifted.

After checking the sources, I found the following: 1. FFmpeg headers are bundled and not removed in %prep (versions 4 to 8 are bundled[1]). The binary package doesn't have a direct dependency on system FFmpeg libraries because it uses dlopen(). [2] 2. The above BR: should spell out pkgconfig(libavcodec) pkgconfig(libavformat) pkgconfig(libswscale) instead. 3. There's an approved PR to add FFmpeg 9 support upstream. [3]
