Job Description
by Tyler Golden
Hi,
Our employment branding team was kind enough to let one of their writers review our description.
Here is the finished product:
Job summary:
Fedora is a big community that includes contributors from many different countries, each with their own experiences and historical backgrounds that contribute to a diverse mix of cultural, educational, and behavioral norms. To continuously create and foster an inclusive environment in the Fedora community, it's important to respond to the needs of these contributors. The Fedora Diversity Advisor Search team is looking for a Fedora Diversity Advisor to act as a source of support and information for all contributors, especially those from underrepresented populations, so that issues of inclusion and equity can be discussed with the planning of multiculturalism and comfort.
As a Fedora Diversity Advisor, you will act in a supporting role and give advice on the strategy for diversity issues and equality, as well as promote inclusion in the Fedora community. You'll also act on diversity parameters within the community.
Primary job responsibilities:
*
Increase visibility of minority contributors through talks, feature articles, and awards
*
Make explicit invitations and provide financial support to attend conferences and give talks
*
Help develop skills by offering targeted workshops and internships
*
Create a welcoming environment by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct
*
Implement equality and diversity plans that will have a big effect on the Fedora community, i.e. fostering communication, networking, and support forums with mailing lists and in-person events
Required skills
*
Excellent written communications skills, demonstrated through blog posts or other written work
*
Understanding of and experience in open source communities
*
Ability to communicate at a moderate technical level about open source projects
*
Experience writing grants is a plus
*
Experience in similar roles in your past career is a significant advantage
One thing I would consider adding to the requirements is that we expect the person to have some knowledge / experience of working with historically underrepresented groups. I don't think it makes sense to consider someone who doesn't either have first hand experience with this or who hasn't been a part of some outreach work. As an Advisor, I would expect them to already have some experience with this.
What do you think?
Best Regards,
Tyler Golden

Fedora Diversity Advisor Interest ROLE CALL
by K Rain Leander
Hello everyone!
On last week's call I formally withdrew from the Fedora Diversity Advisor position and then realized that we didn't know exactly who is interested as not everyone has been available for the call (hopefully we're solving that issue via http://doodle.com/36urckdbz6xn9ixz - perhaps we should propose more times?) I thought I'd shoot an email out here.
Who is interested in the Fedora Diversity Advisor role?
Tyler and I discussed how to handle internal candidates and I'll summarize and send them out shortly for discussion.
Grtz,

(By-weekly) Call Schedule
by K Rain Leander
Hello fellow FDASC members:
In light of the http://doodle.com/36urckdbz6xn9ixz - six out of eight people replied - I have canceled this week's meeting and scheduled the following meetings to occur every other week:
Wednesday May 27th @11AM CET
Tuesday June 2nd @1PM CET
I sent invitations via google calendar to both diversity(a)lists.fedoraproject.org as well as our individual email addresses.
I am honestly scared to delete / modify / cancel the old meeting time within Red Hat's zimbra calendar because we are in the midst of transitioning people from zimbra to google and ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN.
I'm sorry for the possible confusion and hopefully we'll get more people on the call next week.

Internal Candidates
by K Rain Leander
Since we have a few people interested in the role, we need to figure out how to handle internal candidates (versus candidates that are not currently on the search committee) in order to maintain transparency and eliminate conflict of interest.
Proposal:
- Form a FDAsearch panel made of those not interested in the position (plus a few more people from the community and Red Hat if this is super small) to discuss candidates' qualifications, internal and external.
- If an internal candidate is eliminated, can they can help with the interview process?
- I would hope for no hard feelings - how would you feel if it worked this way?
