Hi folks,
What do we think about exploring a Fedora + GNOME Women's Day combined
event for 2020?
Nest is next week and the global FWD organizing session is up soon! So,
I wanted to pitch an early idea so we can connect with the GNOME
Community if there is an interest.
Last week, the GNOME Community had their annual summit, GUADEC. The
GNOME Community is launching their own Diversity & Inclusion efforts and
building a team up. In the D&I Birds of a Feather, I floated the idea to
the GNOMEies about joining up together to make a Fedora + GNOME W.D.
And besides, GNOME has probably been a part of every annual FWD, if only
as a presenter's laptop… so we could make explore ways to team up with
the GNOME folks and also invite them to co-create this year's event.
What do folks think? I am looking to gauge interest right now, so a
quick +1/-1 and why is helpful. Otherwise I will work on pinging some
GNOME D&I folks to hang out in our Nest session. :)

Hi folks!
The WhenIsGood poll results are in. Our next team meeting will take
place on Thursday, August 13th 2020 at 14:00 UTC:
https://apps.fedoraproject.org/calendar/meeting/9784/
This will be one week after Flock/Nest, so it will be a good follow-up
from any discussions or planning from our team hackfest that Niharika
proposed.
You can download an ical file to import into your preferred calendar app
at the link above. Or, tie a string on your finger and don't forget. :)
Looking forward to seeing folks there!

Dear all,
You are kindly invited to the meeting:
How To Build An Open Community (GUADEC 2020) on 2020-07-22 from 12:45:00 to 13:10:00 America/New_York
At Online
The meeting will be about:
I started my career in an information technology working with students and lecturers from diverse backgrounds and abilities. While I was at the institution, I created and worked with different groups, and over time I developed my skills around community building and mentorship. In my experience in NIIT Port Harcourt center, Nigeria, the female to male student ratio was approximately 1:5. In some years, only one woman would graduate from the software engineering program or none. Seeing this as an issue, I formed a group of women in IT, mentoring them in their studies. I will use this as a case study to look at ways to build communities centered around mentorship.
In my talk I will like to share my experiences around the following topics:
* Taking the first steps in becoming a community builder
* Creating a diverse and inclusive community in a Nigerian educational institution
* The role of mentorship in making IT accessible
* The common and unique problems faced by the women I worked with, including learning specialized language and breaking into closed communities

Dear all,
You are kindly invited to the meeting:
Communication Hacks: Strategies for fostering collaboration and dealing with conflict in open source communities (GUADEC 2020) on 2020-07-22 from 11:00:00 to 11:25:00 America/New_York
At Online
The meeting will be about:
Do you struggle with giving or receiving feedback? Have you found it difficult to work with team members you only talk to online, or who belong to a different culture than you do? Do you wish you had more charisma?
After reading many self-help books, watching various TED Talks, and listening to a ton of podcasts, I've condensed my learnings to help you improve your communications skills, deal with conflict, and collaborate better than ever in open source communities (and everywhere else).

Hi folks!
Please fill out the meeting poll below to choose a new monthly meeting
day/time for the Fedora D&I Team. A meeting time will be announced on or
after the evening of Friday, 17 July:
https://whenisgood.net/fedora/2020-divinc-meeting
Remember to change to your local timezone before selecting times.
Our meetings happen once a month. In the past we have used IRC/Telegram;
we could experiment with an audio/video option too. You can indicate
your preference in the "comment" field of the Whenisgood poll. I am
volunteering to chair the first meeting, but I am happy to have a
rotating chair responsibility for future meetings.
The deadline for this poll is Friday, 17 July. We will follow a monthly
cadence for meetings after then.
Thanks all!

Hello!
I'm Niharika Shrivastava and I am extremely willing to help shape Fedora's
D&I vision.
1. I was an Outreachy intern in 2019 with Fedora Modularity: You can
check out my work here
<https://github.com/fedora-modularity/ModulemdTranslationHelpers>.
2. I then became a GCI mentor for Modularity (fun fact: Fedora had the
highest number of contributions this GCI)
3. I held my first FWD event at my university: You can check it out here
<https://orionstar25.github.io/fwd-19/>. (I had also submitted this blog
post for the Fedora Community Magazine but I think it either got rejected /
still under review / lost.)
4. I gave 2 two talks at Flock 19: Talk 1: here
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T48sow7Ve4c&list=PL0x39xti0_64C75dRUuwlXlfY…>,
Talk 2: here
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn2Cn6_vCxE&list=PL0x39xti0_64C75dRUuwlXlfY…>
(Only
the 1st half was recorded :()
5. I have organized various other events centring around D&I at my
university. I will graduate this year and I want to expand Fedora's reach
at my new workplace (hopefully, a LOT more places) as well as help
create/polish new events.
As a newcomer to Fedora's D&I resources (
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/diversity-inclusion/get-involved/) I
found certain things unclear:
1. Is there any place which shows current statistics about the diversity
situation in Fedora? A simple counter/percentage for underrepresentation
can help us gauge our goals (e.g. aspire to have a 50:50 ratio by 20xx).
2. I feel the resources aim at people who want to directly help with the
D&I cause (i.e, mentor, hold outreach events and campaigns, collaborate
across teams). But there are no "go-to" resources if someone wants to
indirectly help the cause (maybe because they're not up to taking
leadership roles yet) like (but not limited to):
1. Participate in Outreachy.
2. Participate in ongoing FWD events across the world.
3. Want to create content for the D&I team (e.g. posters,
documentation, revamp websites) solely for exposure and learning
purposes.
3. I couldn't find much about previous FWD events except on the Pagure
issues page. But I feel that since FWD has been a success over the years,
there should be a dedicated page mentioning all the past held FWDs, and
scheduled FWDs (this can also help 2.2) along with contact information of
their organizers. This way its easier to collaborate for the organizers
across countries for ideas --- will make a separate ticket for this.
4. The website talks about bi-weekly scheduled meeting but the
calendar is empty (is this expected?).
5. I felt the "*Welcome to the "Fedora Diversity & Inclusion Team"
mailing list*" email was unclear on what kind of adjustments were being
talked about. (I'm sorry for nitpicking but I felt it could be phrased a
little better). 🙈
Having said that, I would love to help out in solving all of these issues
(may take a while but I'm excited to volunteer). I apologize if this isn't
the right place to raise these queries.
Thanking you,
Niharika S.
