Hello!
I'm Niharika Shrivastava and I am extremely willing to help shape Fedora's D&I vision.
1. I was an Outreachy intern in 2019 with Fedora Modularity: You can check out my work here https://github.com/fedora-modularity/ModulemdTranslationHelpers. 2. I then became a GCI mentor for Modularity (fun fact: Fedora had the highest number of contributions this GCI) 3. I held my first FWD event at my university: You can check it out here https://orionstar25.github.io/fwd-19/. (I had also submitted this blog post for the Fedora Community Magazine but I think it either got rejected / still under review / lost.) 4. I gave 2 two talks at Flock 19: Talk 1: here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T48sow7Ve4c&list=PL0x39xti0_64C75dRUuwlXlfYRgjgdEP4&index=68, Talk 2: here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn2Cn6_vCxE&list=PL0x39xti0_64C75dRUuwlXlfYRgjgdEP4&index=50 (Only the 1st half was recorded :() 5. I have organized various other events centring around D&I at my university. I will graduate this year and I want to expand Fedora's reach at my new workplace (hopefully, a LOT more places) as well as help create/polish new events.
As a newcomer to Fedora's D&I resources ( https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/diversity-inclusion/get-involved/), I found certain things unclear:
1. Is there any place which shows current statistics about the diversity situation in Fedora? A simple counter/percentage for underrepresentation can help us gauge our goals (e.g. aspire to have a 50:50 ratio by 20xx). 2. I feel the resources aim at people who want to directly help with the D&I cause (i.e, mentor, hold outreach events and campaigns, collaborate across teams). But there are no "go-to" resources if someone wants to indirectly help the cause (maybe because they're not up to taking leadership roles yet) like (but not limited to): 1. Participate in Outreachy. 2. Participate in ongoing FWD events across the world. 3. Want to create content for the D&I team (e.g. posters, documentation, revamp websites) solely for exposure and learning purposes. 3. I couldn't find much about previous FWD events except on the Pagure issues page. But I feel that since FWD has been a success over the years, there should be a dedicated page mentioning all the past held FWDs, and scheduled FWDs (this can also help 2.2) along with contact information of their organizers. This way its easier to collaborate for the organizers across countries for ideas --- will make a separate ticket for this. 4. The website talks about bi-weekly scheduled meeting but the calendar is empty (is this expected?). 5. I felt the "*Welcome to the "Fedora Diversity & Inclusion Team" mailing list*" email was unclear on what kind of adjustments were being talked about. (I'm sorry for nitpicking but I felt it could be phrased a little better). 🙈
Having said that, I would love to help out in solving all of these issues (may take a while but I'm excited to volunteer). I apologize if this isn't the right place to raise these queries.
Thanking you, Niharika S.
Hi Niharika,

You are already off to a great start in D&I Team by helping organize
Fedora Women's Day :) Most of us usually hang out in the #fedora-diversity IRC or Telegram group. We hope to see you there!
As a newcomer to Fedora's D&I resources (
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/diversity-inclusion/get-involved/), I found certain things unclear:
- Is there any place which shows current statistics about the
diversity situation in Fedora? A simple counter/percentage for underrepresentation can help us gauge our goals (e.g. aspire to have a 50:50 ratio by 20xx).
CommOps has a script to get community members by geographical region &
countries. While we do always strive to improve the representation of underrepresented groups in our community, we don't have other diversity-focused metrics currently as we don't collect any demographic data from our community members.
- I feel the resources aim at people who want to directly help with
the D&I cause (i.e, mentor, hold outreach events and campaigns, collaborate across teams).
The D&I team docs are not really updated at the moment. If you could open
a ticket and propose to add this to docs (along with other edits you see fit), I think it would be a very valuable contribution! The Make Your First Steps http://docs.horsefunerals.co.uk/en-US/diversity-inclusion/contribute/join/# section seems like a good fit to me for 2,3. Regarding 1, I feel it should be a separate section in our docs where we talk about our participation in program, previous Fedora Outreachy interns and their experience i.e. CommBlog posts. Some of the content for this can be sourced from here. http://docs.horsefunerals.co.uk/en-US/docs/

A list of previous FWDs sounds like a great idea! You can also add
published event reports from some of the previous FWDs.Ideally, you would want to update it here https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/diversity-inclusion/fedora-womens-day/about/ and link it to the FWD section in D&I events page https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/diversity-inclusion/fedora-womens-day/about/
- The website talks about bi-weekly scheduled meeting but the
calendar is empty (is this expected?).
Due to different time schedules of members and the global pandemic, it has
been difficult to find someone to organize and chair the meetings. Would you be interested in chairing them? Another option to discuss any issues or questions is to just post them on Telegram or IRC as most of us are active there and will reply.
- I felt the "*Welcome to the "Fedora Diversity & Inclusion Team"
mailing list*" email was unclear on what kind of adjustments were being talked about. (I'm sorry for nitpicking but I felt it could be phrased a little better). 🙈
Are you talking about Self
http://docs.horsefunerals.co.uk/en-US/diversity-inclusion/contribute/join/ - Introduction section in our team docs http://docs.horsefunerals.co.uk/en-US/diversity-inclusion/contribute/join/ or something else? We can discuss this further in the channel if you want.
Having said that, I would love to help out in solving all of these issues

Glad to see you are interested. Looking forward to the new tickets :) If you have any questions, just post it in the channel.
Best, Bee
Thanking you, Niharika S.

Docs are a great place we could look at for updates. We have a few already highlighted in our Pagure:
https://pagure.io/fedora-diversity/issues?status=Open&tags=type+-+docs
Tickets #116, #120, #122, and #138 are probably good places to start.

Also, anyone is welcome to chair the meetings! What this means is taking responsibility to prep a meeting agenda in advance, start the IRC logging with zodbot, take notes, and help watch the clock so we don't spend too long on one topic. We can also rotate the chair if multiple people are willing to help out.
I could chair one, maybe two, meetings a month.
