Hi folks,
What do we think about exploring a Fedora + GNOME Women's Day combined event for 2020?
Nest is next week and the global FWD organizing session is up soon! So, I wanted to pitch an early idea so we can connect with the GNOME Community if there is an interest.
Last week, the GNOME Community had their annual summit, GUADEC. The GNOME Community is launching their own Diversity & Inclusion efforts and building a team up. In the D&I Birds of a Feather, I floated the idea to the GNOMEies about joining up together to make a Fedora + GNOME W.D.
And besides, GNOME has probably been a part of every annual FWD, if only as a presenter's laptop… so we could make explore ways to team up with the GNOME folks and also invite them to co-create this year's event.
What do folks think? I am looking to gauge interest right now, so a quick +1/-1 and why is helpful. Otherwise I will work on pinging some GNOME D&I folks to hang out in our Nest session. :)
Hey Justin,
It is a really great idea. I'm +1 to join forces with the GNOME community.

Do you mean having one combined event in addition to local FWD?
If you are still unsure about specific details, it would be great to speak about this in our Nest session and explore how would be the best way to collaborate with the GNOME community. :)

This is a great idea to collaborate with the GNOME community. I am a +1 to have a single event this year by combining Fedora + GNOME Women Day, may be a global virtual event.
We can certainly discuss details in our session during Flock.
Thanks, Amita

Hey all!
I suggest sticking with our local organizer model. At the global level, we can continue to focus on how best to support local organizers. I envision a partnership with GNOME where the following happens:
(1) GNOME Community members participate in the event CFP process (2) Update Resource Pack to include more GNOME content and community points of contact
Obviously, 2020 will impact how events are organized. But I think the local/global model we have used in the past still works. Even if we are virtual, there are still different time zones and local languages. Our local organizers are better equipped to understand these things than we are. :)
Some discussion points that come to my mind (probably best for the Nest session):
(1) Sharing budget: Where does event funding come from? (2) Supporting organizers: What kinds of requests for support might we get from the community?
I have seen other communities running virtual events receive requests for headsets, data bundles/internet subscription, and fuel for power. Especially given the global reach and strong presence in LATAM and APAC (where connectivity is a mixed bag), we should think about this ahead of time.
Once our FWD organizing session is scheduled, I will follow up with the GNOMEies about logistics and how they can join. :)

I'm +1 too to join forces. Helps greatly in outreach and branding!
