This timer prevents the CPU from truly going idle ..."" I have been completely unable to figure out the following use case. My laptop overheats and powers off if the cpu load is high for too long. Actual results: No obvious way to burn ISO images in Fedora Linux 19. Expected results: Directions to burn ISO disk in Fedora Linux 19 Additional info: I had a new-to-me computer that I assumed would not support 64 bit, but after installing 32 bit found out that 64 was supported by my processor. I downloaded 64 ( Fedora-Live-Desktop-x86_64-19-1.iso ), and wanted to burn a disk of it, but the option was not available and the directions online did not help. I had to go back to Windows on a different machine to burn it. Note: I do have a DVD burner on this machine. There is no create button 5. After clicking the plus button you are asked to choose the protocol type 6. The 'add network connection' dialogue comes up with the identity section selected on the left side of the dialogue 1,2,3. The dialogue is different to what is shown in 'Figure 7.5. Though Fedora can work with a secure boot UEFI bios, certain features have been disable (See Fedora 18 UEFI Secure Boot Edition 18.4). As hibernation (suspend to disk) functionality has been disabled on an UEFI Secure Boot system, users need to be aware, prior to installation of Fedora (as sole OS on the system), whether to enable or disable this functionality. Those using Fedora on a laptop/netbook, shouldn't discover *after* completing installation, that hibernation has been disabled. It becomes a huge pain, to google how to disable the /boot/efi partition, and grub2, if even possible. If not documented or referenced in the install-guide, CommonBugs should make note of this issue. It would be correct to say that no data can *possibly* be deleted from any disks you *don't* select at this stage, but it is not true that all data will be removed from disks you *do* select. Suggesting that this is the case prevents people from following lots of common install paths. What actually happens to the data on the selected disks depends on the user's choices at Installation Options and 'custom partitioning' or Reclaim Space. If you go to custom partitioning, basically, you're in complete control of what happens; you can do all sorts of stuff from there, but no data/partitions will be lost unless you explicitly choose for that to happen. If the disk has sufficient unpartitioned space and you just pick the easiest 'install into empty space' path, no existing data will be disturbed, though any existing bootloader in the MBR will be overwritten (this is normal and has always been the case). If you go through Reclaim Space, you get the choice of what existing partitions to delete or resize. ===================================================================== Mail 2 from Chris Murphy: Yeah, the user actually needs to go to some extreme lengths to erase all data on the selected disk. In Custom, it's deleted one partition at a time, with an optional shortcut that popsup offering to delete all related partitions (which still may not be all data on disk). The most egregious omission in this (otherwise pretty good) document is treatment of SCOPE. This probably belongs in the vicinity of 1.3. Analysis first. Map each of the security solutions you have in the guide onto the ISO Reference Model: Layer 1/2 security measures (like WiFi security) protect frames. The scope of the security is limited to a single segment. No security beyond the router and no security within end systems. Layer 3 security protected datagrams (VPNs do this, IPSec ....). The scope is an enclave tunneled through an internetwork. The protection cannot extend beyond the VPN boxes, so data is wholly unprotected within end systems (and LAN if the VPN box is associated with the last router). Layer 4/5 security includes SSL (aka TLS). You have a how-to for securing an http server (good) but no admonitions regarding scope -- the security extends from the TCP socket in one end system to the TCP socket at the other end of the connection -- again no security inside the OS comes from SSL. All of the above security measures protect infrastructure. But they do not protect the data. Layer 6/7 security measures protect the data. Here the scope _can be_ truly end to end. S/MIME is a good example (so is ssh and XML sign/crypt) where the data passes over the internet and through the OS in protected form. Only in a fairly small space is the data unprotected. In Evolution, for example, only the parts of the UA that deal with composing, reading, ... mail are places where the authenticity and confidentiality of the data is possible. Most of the rest of the UA (including all the filing system deals with data that has been protected exactly the way it's been sent over the network. In the case of Evolution (UAs differ in implementation) secured data is stored in the file system exactly the way it was transmitted. Recommendations: 1) include a mapping similar to above so users have an idea what the scope of this or that security measure is. 2) emphasize those security measures that apply to applications (layer 6/7) as Fedora distribution evolves and matures. (What got me here this morning is the continuing frustration getting Evolution to properly play ball with DoD CAC cards ... works, but doesn't 'just work'). There's no indication of backwards compatibility from qemu, although virsh and friends may still accept .conf definitions and Know What To Do when talking to qemu. In F18 and F19, `qemu-kvm -cpu ?cpuid` and `qemu-kvm -cpu ?dump` do not function. In F18, `qemu-kvm -cpu ?` gives a terse list of definitions. in F19, `qemu-kvm -cpu ?` gives a more descriptive list, and also includes a comprehensive list of recognized CPU flags. This could possibly replace `?cpuid` In both, `qemu-kvm -cpu <name>,enforce` functions as expected; this content is commented out. Looking further into comparing guest CPU features, I find `virsh capabilities` will generate xml representing the host. It also appears to represent other architectures that the host could emulate - if the appropriate packages (ie qemu-arm ) are installed, and I correctly understand what they do. There's also `virsh cpu-baseline` to generate a cpu definition that would allow migration between file-defined hosts, and `virsh cpu-compare` to compare a defined host with the local host. Both of these rely on [deprecated] xml .conf cpu definition files. I haven't been able to find a more elegant way to compare cpu configurations than scripting together the above virsh commands, presuming `virsh capabilities` works the way I suspect. The qemu roadmap cites `-cpu best` as a way to get the best CPU definition when creating a guest - but it doesn't work here, and I'm not sure how it would make a determination if it did. A lot of the information I've discovered deals directly with qemu, not libvirt. With qemu moving back to hard coded cpu definitions, I think it would be good to get some insight on if libvirt tools are affected and how they are handling the change. In general, I think it would be better to present libvirt commands rather than commands executing qemu directly. I'm not submitting a patch for this one because I'm not sure where to go with it. Now straight to the point! (The same description is available in the attached pdf file and is more easy to follow) I've noticed some inaccuracy in Fedora 17 “Power Management Guide” (Fedora Documentation), particularly in section “2.5. Tuned and ktune” including “2.5.1. The tuned.conf file” and “2.5.2 Tuned-adm”. In section “2.5. Tuned and ktune” right bellow the “yum install tuned” command it's written: “Installing the tuned package also sets up a sample configuration file at /etc/tuned.conf and activates the default profile.” There is no such file in /etc. I found a /etc/tuned/active_profile file containing the following: “/usr/lib/tuned/balanced/tuned.conf”. I'm not sure this file (/etc/tuned.conf) is missing only on my system or it has a new location by default for each profile - /usr/lib/tuned/profileX/tuned.conf. Bellow in this section and in “2.5.1. The tuned.conf file” it is pointed again that the default location for the tuned.conf file is /etc/tuned.conf. In section “2.5.2 Tuned-adm” in the first paragraph it is written “Fedora 17 includes a number of predefined profiles for typical use cases...”. Just to be precise it is good to be mentioned that these profiles are not installed by default with “yum install tuned” command (tuned-2.0.1-1.fc17 package), but can be found in tuned-profile-compat-2.0.1-1.fc17 package (I found it in Gnome Package Manager). Another thing in this section is in the last third of the page where it is written: “All the profiles are stored in separate subdirectories under /etc/tune-profiles. So /etc/tune-profiles/desktop-powersave contains all the necessary files and settings for that profile. Each of these directories contains up to four files:” There /etc/tune-profiles directory does not exist. Instead I found the profiles stored in /run/lib/tuned. Each directory for the corresponding profile typically contains only 2 files - script.sh and tuned.conf. The presence of script.sh is not mentioned in the directories contains description – it is mentioned ktune.sh insetad. That's all. I hope this is helpful. Description of problem: I worked on the draft of the release notes, pointed out via markups, errors in grammer, missing words and miss spellings. It was decided to not correct some of the errors and publish. I have prepared a document which highlights the errors, and most of all, corrects an omission in an Appendix A3. My original release notes submission was done at end-April. Hereto this bug is an update to the release notes. I would use the collaboration features of libreoffice, but not everyone knows how to use it. Therefore I have resorted to coloring text yellow to show removals, red to show insertions and to also insert words that were omitted. I also asked some questions as to what the author was trying to say. We all, myself included are guilty of omitting words when we write our first draft. Because we think while we write, a good proof read of the document is needed. So I am reporting 25+ corrections to the release notes shown on the website. The document with the corrections is attached. I am also very disappointed that the proofreading effort was not recognized. In that regard, I included an additional Appendix A3.
