Stagnant TQSG entries

Four (4) of the 14 translations of the Translation Quick Start Guide are
outdated and I believe they should be removed. Old and likely
misleading information is damaging to new contributors' morale and
process understanding. However, this has obvious implications for
links. A future publishing platform should provide some safeguards
here, since an out-of-date translation could be redirected along with a
helpful banner message telling the contributor why he's reading the
canonical version and not the translation he originally wanted.
I'm going to add this to tomorrow's agenda; if for some reason I can't
make it to the meeting please feel free to discuss, although I hope to
be there this time.

mailing list admins

I find myself in solo control of our two FDP mailing lists (this one and
f-docs-commits). My practice is to always make sure that I have another
mail list admin listed.
I'm wondering, could we just make the rule, "All FDSCo members are named
admins and have the shared password for all FDP lists"?
The downside is the continuous "post by non-member" notices one
receives, and if they get annoying, a simple filter makes them go away.
I also try to go in once every few weeks and clear out the pending admin
tasks, which are always about a mass delete of held-for-approval spam.
Thoughts?

Self-Introduction: Free Hat

Hello to all,
My name is Ohad Feiner (aka Free Hat) and I should like to begin doing some translations of the documents in to Hebrw. I live in Tel-Aviv, Israel and am starting my Computer Science degree in TAU in a few months. Right now I am working as a customer support rep for an online game.
My wish is to have the release notes and official documentation available in hebrew - thus making it easier for others to use this great distro (been using fedora [and linux in general] for almost a year now, had FC5 and recently upgraded to F7). This is for starters of course - perhaps someday more will come.
I speak Hebrew and English pefectly (spent 2 years as a kid in the US) and I have had some non-professional experience translating from english to hebrew (mainly for the hebrew wikipedia). I had also writtem several english and hebrew e-zines a few years back as a BBS-kid (yeah, those days :). My computer skills are above-average (not in the linux world), but im not a wizkid - and cannot code too well (at the moment - though i have a good grasp of some concepts within that area). I am, however, relatively good with editing and design.
I am not all that experience in Fedora or Linux yet, but I have a relatively good technical vocabulary, and hopefully this would do for translations :)

RPM task

what is v. how to

Just a general note, because it happens to all of us, and it is always
worth mentioning.
When writing technical docs, it is easy to slip into a descriptive mode,
where we:
* List what is on the screen and what happens when you click it
* List all the commands available and what some combinations do
(examples)
What we forget is that much of that is available by reading the help
docs or the man/info pages. All that content is actually "what is"
information. Docs written to that spec are like maps, guiding you to a
location, but not telling what you can do once you get there.
How-to/what-you-can-do documents are different. They focus on one or
more specific tasks the user wants to accomplish:
* Setting up a home firewall to supplement or replace an appliance
* Hardening a system beyond the defaults
* Programming a Python application that interacts with a Web service
* Creating a custom live spin of Fedora
Honestly, those documents assume the existence of the other content --
the help/man/info pages.
We want to keep our content focused on what hasn't been written. Focus
on specific examples, tasks the reader wants to accomplish. Make them
specific enough *and* generic enough, so they can be applied to
different situations.
When working, read all the associated documents that come e.g. with the
RPM package (/usr/share/doc/foo). If those are lacking, make notes
about what needs to be added. Keep adding to those notes as you write
your how-to-do-it, noting what needs to be added to the default content
to make it (more) complete.
This summer, there is a student project[1] that is working to provide a
Wiki-based front end to editing man and info pages. A goal is to
produce patches that can be submitted upstream, probably through
bugzilla. This is going to give you somewhere to input all those good
ideas you've been saving.
Then we can reference the default package docs from within our
supplemental docs, relying upon them to be complete and useful.

Self-Introduction: Ville-Pekka Vainio (and something about my summer project)

Hi all,
I have already been doing Finnish translations and hanging out in #fedora-docs
for a while, but I haven't posted a self-introduction yet, so here it is.
I'm a Computer Science major at the University of Helsinki. During the
academic year I live in Helsinki but now during the summer I'll be staying at
my parent's place in Kuopio, Eastern Finland. The time zone here is EEST,
that's UTC + 3.
I have just finished all the courses required for a B.Sc. degree, I will
officially graduate in the fall and then begin my M.Sc. studies.
I have used Fedora since FC2, Fedora was also the first distribution I've ever
installed. I installed Fedora just because I really liked using the Linux
installation at the CS Department, which was and still is Fedora based.
I've been in the Translation Project for bit more than a year now, doing GUI
translations. I joined originally because I wanted pirut in Finnish, but I
think I've done some translations to nearly every module there is in
translation CVS during this time.
Translating documentation to Finnish is also the reason I joined the Docs
project. I translated release-notes, about-fedora, readme and
readme-burning-isos for Fedora 7 and contributed to the homepage translation.
Besides Fedora, I've also done Finnish translations for CMS Made Simple
<http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/> and KDE. I'm closely following the LinuxTV
and VDR projects, since I'm running a personal video recorder box based on
FC6 and those projects. Two of my remote control related patches have made it
to kernel via the LinuxTV project :)
I first started programming about 10 years ago and have been doing it more
actively for the last five or six years. The languages I know best are Java,
C and C++, Python and PHP.

Then something about my summer project. I was chosen to take part in an event
called Summercode Finland 2007. The basic idea is similar to GSoC, but as the
name suggests, this is for Finnish university students. The event is
organized by COSS, The Finnish Centre for Open Source Solutions.
My project is about extending MoinMoin to support publication and editing of
man/info pages. The initial idea came from FedoraBounties and Karsten, who's
also mentoring me during this project.
