The new bookmarks layout causes two problems: 1. Nobody filed a fedora-bookmarks bug so Fedora 13 (and anyone on F-11 or F-12 etc) will default to going to http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/ which is a 404. Since the bookmarks can only be imported on first launch, we cannot push an update to fix this if the user has launched the browser (which is extremely likely). 2. Even if I were to fix the bookmarks page to point directly to a specific release version (which again would take effect only if someone would yum update before launching Firefox), then if anyone updated to F-14, the bookmark would not change and would still point to e.g. F-13. So, I do not think that we should put version specific information into our bookmarks URLs. To solve both of the above problems, I believe we should try to do some User-Agent detection and redirection. Fedora browsers have an RPM NVR attached to them. For example: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; es-ES; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100517 Fedora/3.6.4-1.fc13 Firefox/3.6.4 This tells us that the user's installed language is es-ES and it's a Fedora browser, specifically running F-13. Tx duplicate teams removal

Hi! The docs translation period starts in two months, it would be nice for the l10n teams with duplicate language resources on Transifex to have their resources justified. >From what requires action, the duplicate resources named as regional codes (like ru_RU or es_ES) hold our previous work. While the resources named as language identifiers (like ru or es) are out of sync or contain empty translations. It means that the project translators would lose progress if the project maintainers kill the duplicates now. The progressed modules need to be merged in the right place, where these would be available to the teams members afterwards. This is to be done by the l10n coordinators. There's also a deadline to be set so we don't make the cleanup an endless process. August 15th, 2011, seems to be enough, in case someone's on vacation. That's 2 weeks before the docs translation period starts and about 1.5 month from now. Then we may ask the project maintainers to run a script to remove all those language resources. If the Transifex stats [2] don't lie, the following teams are to be REMOVED: as_IN bg_BG bn_IN bs_BA ca_ES cz_CZ da_DK de_DE el_GR fa_IR fi_FI fr_FR gu_IN he_IL hi_IN hr_HR hu_HU id_ID is_IS it_IT jp_JP kn_IN ko_KR lt_LT lv_LV ml_IN ms_MY nb_NO nl_NL or_IN pa_IN pl_PL ru_RU sr_RS sr_RS@latin sk_SK sv_SE ta_IN te_IN uk_UA vi_VN The following team is to be LEFT INTACT: zh_CN (as opposed to zh_TW and zh_HK) The merging task can be accomplished by using the Transifex-client tool available in Fedora repository. You will need the language remapping capability introduced in version 0.5.2, which is currently in the testing repo. To use now, run: su -c "yum install transifex-client --enablerepo=*testing" or update using the testing repo: su -c "yum update transifex-client --enablerepo=*testing" Please give the package transifex-client-0.5.2-1.fc15.noarch [1] good karma so it would land in the stable repo soon. The procedure has been summarized before [3], there's also a complete manual to the tool [4]. It took me less time because I only downloaded one language I wanted. For instance, to update the Virtualization Guide I did: 1. configure the tool to use the chosen resource: a. create a folder, say, "transifex" in the home dir and cd into it b. [misha@pc transifex] $ tx init c. [misha@pc transifex] $ tx set --auto-remote https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/fedora-virtualization-guide/ 2. pull the "ru_RU" translation modules: a. [misha@pc transifex] $ tx pull -l ru_RU 3. use language remapping to push the modules as "ru": a. remap the language by adding the line "lang_map = ru:ru_RU" to the main section of ~/transifex/.tx/config [5] b. [misha@pc transifex] $ tx push --translations -l ru 4. delete the local files You may be able to do the whole docs collection at once using $ tx set --auto-remote https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/fedora/r/fedora-15-docs/ as soon as the corresponding ticket [6] is closed. Introduction and plans on documenting systemd

Hi! I'm a 35 year old guy from Norway.I've worked in different areas of the IT industry since 1995, focusing mainly on networking, server management and computer security. I started working with NT 3.5 servers and workstations, and after a while I started getting interested in the Linux operating system. I started using Debian because that was the os installed on the company's servers. When configuring new servers I chose Redhat, and began getting comfortable with that. I've used Redhat to run various firewalls and mail scanners and set up RH with basic networking and file services as well. I've set up routing and networking using Redhat and HP ProLiant switches. I've also worked as an instructor on TCP/IP and computer security. I've done some programming using C, Python and C#. Nowadays I use Fedora for my desktop, mainly because it focuses on the latest innovation for the Linux computing environment. I've skimmed through some of the code for systemd, and I find this innovation especially appealing. I would like to document it for the Fedora docs project, together with someone else with the same interest! I will start writing about it these days, but I haven't gotten up to speed with the Docbook and Publican parts yet, so I'll just start writing plain text in Emacs... So that was my introduction, hope to get to know you guys better! This is aimed at Sparks, but I'm posting here because it may be of interest to others. As John (jjmcd) said, if you just get some plain- text documentation down, that's a great start. Personally, I find it much easier to "just write," then later fuss over details of phrasing and formatting--and this is the recommendation found somewhere on the wiki, too! As for integrating cgroups with systemd, I'm not qualified for an opinion, but I would say that you should write the documentation that you would want to read. More importantly, we can spend months discussing which way would be the best, or you can write something, and we can spend 5 minutes deciding whether to make revisions. You were probably looking for more solid advice, so you might try contacting whoever is responsible for Systemd in Fedora? Remember: nothing in Fedora is final for longer than 6 months. Hello! I'm very tempted to join the systemd and cgroups functionality in my text, because it is with this combination that the new possibilities really shine. But then again, it would possibly be better separated into distinct sections for the sake of clarity? This is really just brainstorming, but if someone agrees please let me know. I think I'll just write about systemd first, then give some examples of how the two can play together... Chris

Six Sigma with R

If anyone is curious about the R document I'm working on, the current progress is at: http://jjmcd.fedorapeople.org/Download/R-2.13-Six_Sigma_with_R_-_A_Tutorial… Note that this is very incomplete. I don't know if I will ever complete this beast. Each section requires getting some appropriate example data, running experiments to demonstrate the concept, thinning it out to just the important essence, then actually writing prose. R is incredibly rich with all sorts of twisty passageways so even the simplest things often turn into multi-day adventures. Fun, for sure, but very time consuming. Maybe this is my version of Angry Birds. Naturally, each time I touch this I think of a few more things I forgot to include! If anyone wishes to help with this project it would be appreciated, but this is a pretty arcane area. --McD

In an attempt to get more into the open, a report on my to-do items from two meetings ago, which we didn't get to address last meeting: * jjmcd to file bug on PRODUCT/PRODVER in Publican Done - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720656 * jjmcd to check with dgrift on Ubuntu migration / policycoreutils I was unable to locate the bug related to this, and as a result, couldn't remember the details I was looking for. Also, didn't find dgrift on the wiki * jjmcd to look for a Chem/Physics expert for OLF Going through my old emails I didn't run across anyone who looked promising. However, it occurred to me that the Robotics SIG might be interested in a Robotics Guide. Emailed the SIG members but so far no response. Related to OLF, gomix reported to me on IRC that he had contacted his astrophysicist friend (his to-do from that same meeting). No answer last I heard. In other news, I submitted a review request for an R add-on. If anyone has a burning urge to review a kind of strange RPM it would be appreciated: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722640 Some of you are aware that I have been chipping away at a Six Sigma using R tutorial lately. Joining the Docs project

Hi all, I've decided to join the fun and participate in the Fedora Documentation Project. I'm especially interested in contributing to RPM Guide, which has become quite outdated now but which I and Mr Google consider to be a still valuable and unique source of information for RPM users and packagers alike on the net. I'm also joining the Fedora packagers group as I'll maintain one or two currently orphaned packages. Among other things, I already work with jhradilek on the OProfile chapter in the Deployment Guide. In the open source community, I've been involved in the docs, i18n and l10n efforts for several years, particularly in the GNOME Project (https://live.gnome.org/PetrKovar) Also, if there are other guys around interested in working on RPM docs, I'd definitely like to talk to you! Hi everyone, Just a quick email to say hi and introduce myself. My name is Lana, and I've been a Red Hat writer for a while. I work from my home in Canberra, Australia. I have business, marketing, and information systems degrees, and in the next few months I'll also have my technical communication degree. I'm involved in several women in tech advocacy groups (including LinuxChix and Girl Geek Dinners), and I also do a fair bit of speaking about open source technical writing, in case that can be of use to anyone. I'm joining the list mostly because I want to keep a closer eye on what's happening with community docs, and hopefully make some useful contributions where possible. I recently attended the Open Help conference, and would like to share some of the insights I gained from that event, as I think it could help benefit the community. My main areas of interest revolve around standards, processes, and improving the overall standard of technical documentation to encourage and retain users and contributors.
