That's because: a. administrators will need *different* sets of rules/restrictions for access to the router itself and to the various services that run beyond the router (using or non using NAT). b. It is not very clear how/where the predefined firewalld zones implement their policies (ACCEPT or DROP) and when these policies apply to traffic bounded *to* the router system or to traffic that *traverses* the router. For example, an administrator needs an *easy* method to restrict VNC access *to* the router itself (INPUT), but may want free VNC access to some server located *behind* the router (FORWARD). In the second case, forwarding may (or may not) imply NAT, depending if he goes on the Internet via the external interface or simply goes in another LAN segment beyond the router. c. It is not very clear how/where the predefined firewalld zones implement their trafic rules ( *exceptions* to ACCEPT or DROP default policies) and when these rules apply to traffic bounded *to* the router system or to traffic that *traverses* the router. Additional info: Even it is not dynamic, the Shorewall application (http://shorewall.net/) acts as a higher-level language over iptables, offering the same concepts of "zones" for interfaces. Much of its conceptual architecture is directly applicable ("portable") to firewalld, if accepted by developers. Somewhat different from conceptual point of view, the "zones" are "levels of trust surrounding the router", including thr FW zone for the router itself. (unlike firewalld, the shorewall zones have no "sources" or "services" embedded in them). IPv4 and IPv6 zones are completely separated (they actually represent different levels of trust). Administrators may directly define policies, i.e. allow *default* actions to be done when an packet travels from a zone to another (ACCEPT, REJECT). The most sane policy between any two zones is REJECT (with further exceptions defined as rules, see below). Rules are *exceptions to policies* , explicitly defined (based on various criteria such as source IP, destination IP, ports, etc.) Rules may be expressed via predefined (or customised) "macros" (which are the direct equivalent of firewalld's "services"). IPv4 and IPv6 policy and rules are completely separated (IMHO that's good, since the use of global IPv6 addresses pose completely different security problems than NATted & externally firewalled IPv4). The file /boot/grub/grub.conf doesn't exist anymore. The way to do it now is (tested on Fedora 20): 1 - Edit /etc/default/grub 2 - Append information at the line GRUBCMDLINELINUX=" ... console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200 ... Proposal: Adopt an AsciiBinder Based ToolChain

Hi All, I am sorry I missed yesterday's meeting, I am at a conference this week. I have written a longish proposal (http://www.winglemeyer.org/fedora_docs_proposal/latest/proposal/overview.ht…) about adopting an AsciiBinder toolchain. I've tried to outline the challenges we have today and how I believe this will get us a new documentation website and process quickly. There is a Proof of Concept included with details on how you can replicate my work. I'd like feedback and to discuss if we can move forward with this proposal. This email is to drive some discussion around $subject. It follows from a blog soon to be posted on the Fedora Community blog (https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org) The text below is copied from that blog: Tooling, Tooling, Tooling There was strong consensus around changing to new tools and markups. In fact, most of the tooling conversations were held in small groups near the end of the meeting. There was a desire to continue to see a drive to simpler contribution and publication. The only significant question was around the community, upstream adoption and contributor base for pintail which is the central tool in the new processing flow. People were very concerned that there wasn't evidence of enough adoption and contribution to prevent the project from being at risk of going either unmaintained or slowly maintained. Semantic Tagging in AsciiDoc

Hi All, A chance conversation today led me to thinking about semantic markup and AsciiDoc. AsciiDoc is easier to write because it has fewer tags. It is also easier because it has fewer keystrokes. However, it doesn't offer a lot of options for marking up elements to: * ensure consistency of localization by passing element information to the localizer * ensure consistency of formatting by ensuring all of the same elements, for example command names, are marked up the same way * allow for future automated testing with a project like `emender` I went through the Installation Guide and found 97 DocBook XML tags. I've put them in the table on this wiki page: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs_Tag_Discussion Please visit the page and edit it to weigh in on preferences about the tags. I believe this will help us complete our AsciiDoc style guide and do the conversions more rapidly and effectively. I found a small hole in documentation

Hello folks, I was trying to install Fedora in a laptop but I didn't want to delete the Windows partition, just shrink it. I naturally looked up in Documentation as it's not obvious in the partitioner how to shrink a partition to make room in hard disk. I didn't find it. Not I found it anywhere else. I eventually found it out by myself so I would like to help others documenting the process or if it's a known bug, adding a warning to documents. Now.... How can I do that? Cheers and thanks, Sylvia

We just talked about this on the weekly meeting and we agreed that: * we're still using DocBook for this release * at this point it's prettty late in the release cycle (Beta comes out in a month), so we're going to skip the part where we write beats in wiki, and do it straight in docbook in the pagure repo * we're going to use pagure to track progress. I'll create an issue under the above repo for each Change listed at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/25/ChangeSet ; any contributor wishing to cover that change can then assign it to themselves and work on it. Also, anyone who finds a change not listed on the wiki page - things like routine updates to major components - can obviously create an issue for it as well. Hello, I used to contribute for Fedora Docs a couple of years back. Back then, I was a student and after few months of contribution, I had to leave because of my new job. However, here I am introducing myself once again. I started using Linux in 2006 and after sorting out various things, I left the world of windows and began using Linux full time from 2008. I educated myself in computer science and in 2011, I did RHCE. Soon after college, I decided to follow my hobby and choose writing, which led me to become an assistant editor at an online news publication. Although I am here purely out of love for open source and Fedora Linux, but my intention is to learn and know more about Linux operating system, as the same curiosity got me started in the first place. I am willing to contribute my skills in docs and would like to expand to other technical areas as time progresses. I appreciate you all for reading this. Looking forward to a new beginning.
