introduction to doc team

Good afternoon,

Following the wiki for the Doc team I wanted to drop the list a note
introducing myself. My name is Jonathan Jesse and I normally work with the
Kubuntu Documentation team and have also spent sometime working with the KDE
Docs team.

The product I consult on for a living uses Red Hat and I am need to learn
the Red Hat/Fedora way of doing things.

When I joined the Ubuntu project a couple of years ago, I worked with the
group in the documentation team as it seemed the best way to learn how the
system worked and how to use the product, hence the reason to join the
documentation team for Fedora. I hope to learn not only how Fedora does
their documentation but also how to better use an RPM based system.

Hi Jonathan, welcome to the team!  There are a number of people
currently working on our installation guide and release notes -- perhaps
you'd be interested in working with the KDE SIG in Fedora to make sure
their release notes are up to snuff for our release next month?

Paul,

Sorry knew to the whole jargon of Fedora, but what is an SIG?  Is that like
the documentation group?

SIG = Special Interest Group

So yeah, in the Fedora Docs case, you are entirely correct! :)

Actually ...

A SIG is a group that has a common interest, but the outcome of their
work is not critical to the production and release of the distro.

KDE, Fonts, EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) -- all examples
of SIGs.

The Docs Project is what is called a sub-project, where the outcome of
the work is critical to production and release of the distro.  Release
Engineering, Art, and Infrastructure are examples of sub-projects.

This is really not an elitist distinction; there is no value applied to
the definition.  The fact is, SIGs are freer to do what they think are
the right things to do.  Sub-projects are under the aegis of the Project
Board or the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCO) to perform
certain tasks, and are critical enough that Red Hat has hired people to
fill positions within the sub-projects.  

Some sub-projects, such as Docs and Art, are "soft critical", meaning if
we fell apart for a release, the release would go on without us.  That's
a fair distinction, I think.
