At its most basic, it's a container that an ISV can use to run an
application. It's not mean to be a general purpose installation, but
rather focuses on that single application or suite of applications.
Right -- in this case, "appliance" is like any single-purpose piece of
gear. In the kitchen, an electric can-opener, stove, or microwave
oven are appliances, and the meaning is roughly the same.
