Announcing New Meeting (2008-08-01)
by Sebastian Dziallas
Hi all,
the last announcement was maybe a little bit too short-term, so let us
give it another try! The next Education SIG's meeting would take place on:
Friday, August 1 at 1800 UTC on #fedora-meeting
If you're planning to participate or are just interested and going to be
around then, please reply here, so that we can get an overview, whether
it makes sense to held the meeting or not.
Further information and possible topics can be found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Education/Meetings
Thanks!

New Meeting & Further Progress
by Sebastian Dziallas
Hi all,
I wanted to give you some kind of update (including announcements), what
is happening here right now, as well as in other efforts related to
education.
===
1. The most recent announcement outside the Education SIG, but still
related to education, might have been the foundation of the Fedora OLPC SIG.
Greg DeKoenigsberg announced the OLPC SIG here (for all those, who
haven't noticed yet ;)
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-July/msg00009.html
And here is the wiki page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/OLPC
I applaud the OLPC project's efforts concerning education, including
those related to the Sugar desktop environment and would like to
encourage everyone, who is interested, to join this SIG (you'll meet me
there, too :).
===
2. Lets move to some of our internal topics: I would like to announce a
new meeting for...
tomorrow, Friday, July 25 at 1800 UTC on #fedora-meeting
If you're interested, please join us there. Further information can be
found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Education/Meetings
===
3. Our Fedora Education Math Spin... there are also some news concerning
this topic!
Finally, we moved away from our former plans to release a spin for F9.
We're now focused on publishing a spin for F10. But that doesn't mean,
that you'll have to wait until the final release of Fedora 10!
The spin (or more specifically the kickstart file) is already in the GIT
repository. If you want to have a look at it, any suggestions are
welcome. Here is the link:
http://git.fedoraproject.org/git/spin-kickstarts.git?p=spin-kickstarts.gi...
We're going to release a preview spin based on F10 Alpha very soon! So
stay tuned... work is still in progress! :)
By the way: I created also a Feature Page for the spin, which is
necessary to get it approved by FESCo later. It is located here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Education
Please come up with any ideas or suggestions you may have!
Thanks!
Best Regards,
Sebastian Dziallas

Sugar on Fedora
by David Farning
I would like establish a relationship between Sugar Labs and the Fedora
Education Special Interest Group.
The Sugar learning environment which was originally developed for the
One Laptop Per Child project has outgrown it's roots and has been spun
off to Sugar Labs [1].
Fedora packages are making Sugar available for Fedora. I am wondering
if there is interest in creating a Sugar Respin within the education
SIG... and how we at Sugar Labs can help.
thanks

Announcing the Fedora EDU Spin Preview
by Sebastian Dziallas
Hi all,
the time has come... we've an education spin ready! Okay, it's just a
preview, not yet an official spin and of course not bug-free - but I
think it's still worth announcing it.
Here are the announcements:
[1] http://rdieter.livejournal.com/8549.html
[2]
http://sdziallas.joyeurs.com/blog/2008/07/fedora-edu-spin-preview-is-liv....
There are some things, one should know, which are also partly explained
in the blog posts: Be prepared! The spin contains a KDE 4.1 preview and
therefore uses the repos at kde-redhat. It also only focusses on
mathematical apps - so don't expect *all* educational apps on it.
But still, if you have any suggestions, questions or ideas, how to to
improve, please don't hesitate to speak up.
Having that said, here is the link to the download (currently i386 +
torrent only):

Thank you everybody,

Hi all,
I'm pleased to announce the 2008 edition of FOSSED (Free and Open Source
Software in Education) at Governor's Academy in Byfield, MA on August 3-6,
2008. FOSSED has been in existence for 6 years providing incredible
professional development opportunities for educators and techies from all
over North America. The original FOSSED held each year at Gould Academy
in Bethel, Maine has been a smashing success and has featured such notable
FOSS celebrities as Jim McQuillan (founder of LTSP), Jon "Maddog" Hall,
Warren Togami (founder of Fedora), and many more. For the past two years
we've expanded FOSSED to another conference held at the University of New
Hampshire (UNH). This year we're simply moving a little further south to
the beautiful campus of Governors Academy in Byfield MA.

This year we're adding to and changing the focus of FOSSED a bit and
giving developers an opportunity to come together, work together, learn
and really get a chance to find out what's really going on in the world of
FOSS in education. Educators and developers coming together. We're
pleased to announce that Walter Bender of SugarLabs.org (read more here:
http://www.openeducation.net/2008/06/03/walter-bender-discusses-sugar-lab...

registrations develop we'll be inviting many more notable folks from the
world of FOSS.
We'd like to invite you to join us! Bring yourself...bring a team!
Participate, present, sprint, or just listen and learn. We'll provide the
atmosphere, the time, and the experience...all we need is YOU!
We've made it easy for you to attend. One price includes EVERYTHING!
