Dear all,
per the RFC in epel-devel: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/epel-devel@lists.fedoraproject...
and discussion in the EPEL issue: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/epel/steering/issues/367
and in the EPEL meeting last week: https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/meeting-1_matrix_fedoraproject-org/2026-06...
p7zip is being replaced by 7zip in EPEL 9. p7zip was a fork that has not been maintained since 2016, and the codebase has had many CVEs over the years that it's untenable to maintain p7zip going forward.
It is a drop-in replacement if you only use the CLI; however, p7zip did carry a GUI and that is no longer going to be available.
An impact check in COPR shows that all the dependent packages build just fine with no change.
The 7zip for EPEL 9 update should reach testing in tonight's compose: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2026-f9c4dcd003
per the incompatible update policy it will not automatically be pushed to stable, either by karma or by time, and will remain open for testing and feedback for at least one week.
Best regards,
epel-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org
