EPEL, RHEL-5Server and RHEL-5Client
by Konstantin Ryabitsev
So, here's a fun situation:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=246444
In brief:
* python-imaging in EPEL conflicts with python-imaging in RHEL-5Client
* upstream (RHEL5) requests to remove python-imaging because EPEL is
not supposed to override upstream
* removing python-imaging will break dependencies in RHEL-5Server
How do we deal with the fact that there is RHEL-5Server and
RHEL-5Client and that they have different sets of packages?

fftw advice...
by Rex Dieter
I was going to get to work on building fftw2/fftw3 for epel, and have a
small quandry.
Fedora names these fftw2/fftw.
rpmforge currently names them fftw/fftw3. They feel strongly about it, and
users were angered previously at my initial attempts at implementing an
Obsoletes/Provides migration path to fftw2/fftw.
So, I was leaning toward following rpmforge's fftw/fftw3 naming scheme,
but... these modules are currently named fftw2 and fftw in cvs. I'm
unaware of any strict rules, but figured it would be at least uncool to
create packages whose %{name} != cvs_module. So, to move forward here
should I:
1. be uncool and just do it.
or
2. request a new package review for 'fftw3'
??
If 2 is the correct answer here, I'm not sure I'm willing to subject myself
to the further pain/effort of a review (unless someone chimes in quickly to
offer to review it).

spam-o-matic
by Dennis Gilmore
Hey All,
when testing the spam-o-matic script that sends out notifications for broken
dependencies it was accidentally run without the --nomail flag in addition
to not being pointed at a RHEL tree. which resulted in messages sent that
should not have been.
We are terribly sorry for the noise and will try to never ever do it again.
Thank you for your patience and understanding

Getting involved
by Ville Skyttä
Hello,
I'm gradually getting more involved with EPEL, have already built a couple of
packages yesterday and will ask branches of some others soon.
However, my interest is almost exclusively limited to EL-5 at this time.
While I'm not going to make any gratuitous changes to packages that would
cause them to not work on EL-4 and will test at least to some extent with it,
I probably won't be requesting any EL-4 branches nor really promise to
actively maintain packages for it.
So, if you want some packages for which I'm listed as the sole EPEL maintainer
to appear for EL-4 and volunteer to co-maintain them (for EL-4 only or for
later releases too), that's welcome, let me know.
One such example is cvsps - it was listed in EPEL 4 broken deps report,
required by git-cvs. For EL-5 it has been branched and built and will
probably appear in a push soon, but I have no plans to maintain it for EL-4.

EPEL report week 27, 2007
by Thorsten Leemhuis
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Reports/Week27
= Weekly EPEL Summary =
Week 27/2007
== Most important happenings ==
* Policy for "Branching for EPEL if Fedora maintainer does not react"
was approved
* target date for for official EPEL announcement: July 19; we need to
fix all broken deps beforehand (and make sure any new ones hit the repo)
== EPEL SIG Meeting ==
=== Attending ===
>From the Steering Committee:
* dgilmore (DennisGilmore)
* Jeff_S (Jeff Sheltren)
* knurd (ThorstenLeemhuis)
* mmcgrath (MikeMcGrath)
* nirik (KevinFenzi)
* quiad (KarstenWade)
* stahnma (MichaelStahnke)
=== Summary ===
* EPEL Meeting – broken deps – nirik:
* Jeff_S will be responsible for this topic; nirik will try to help
* we need to poke people; they likely don't even know that there are
broken dep
* running a repoclosure before push would be ideal, but not easy; we
should get that with bodhi sooner or later, so we don't look deeper into
this issue
* spam o magic script (broken deps) – mmcgrath
* mmcgrath is looking at it; he committed to have it ready by the next
meeting
* Move epel dirs on servers down below stable – knurd
* last week decided, this week reverted.
* Branch for EPEL if Fedora maintainer does not react – knurd, _blah_
*
https://www.redhat.com/archives/epel-devel-list/2007-July/msg00016.html
got approved, knurd added it to the wiki. We likely need to adjust a
small detail; see
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-July/msg00332.html
* signers group – dgilmore
* dgilmore and mmcgrath can push and sign; that is considered enough
for now
* finish the wiki docs and remove the warnings by end of may – quaid
* round about ready; quaid has some changes pending, but nothing major
* warning on the top EPEL-page in the wiki will get removed shortly
before announcement
* EPEL announcement -- quaid
* early announce draft to epel-devel-l soon; shortly after that early
announce to f-maintainers ; followed by first draft of real announcement
to e-d-l ; finally announce on Jul 19
* RHX and EPEL – quaid
* seems some people still don't really know that RHX actually is
* general agreement to "we should try to work it so that Free and open
source software in RHX is available in EPEL with community support";
quaid> "I doubt we'll have any problem with that idea . I think the RHX
folks feel the same; they have no need to duplicate what we do for no
reason, and lose the gain of the community . It's going to be a few
weeks until we can get a formal set of guidelines between the two groups
. Mainly it's about the messaging, making sure that it's easy to know
the difference between a package from EPEL and one from RHX . I made the
point that ISVs can control that best if the ... actually own the
package in Fedora :) "
