new perl package needs newer versions of dependancies.
by Christopher McCrory
Hello...
I am trying to add a new perl Yahoo-Marketing module package to
fedora/epel, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=524698. One of
the dependencies is for perl-Test-Class. The current fedora package
requires newer versions of several existing modules.
from koji scratch build:
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/getfile?taskID=1693325&name=build.log
+ /usr/bin/perl Build.PL installdirs=vendor
- ERROR: Test::More (0.62) is installed, but we need version >= 0.78
- ERROR: perl (5.008008) is installed, but we need version >= 5.6001
- ERROR: Test::Builder (0.32) is installed, but we need version >= 0.78
- ERROR: Test::Simple (0.62) is installed, but we need version >= 0.78
ERRORS/WARNINGS FOUND IN PREREQUISITES. You may wish to install the versions
of the modules indicated above before proceeding with this installation

What is the general consensus on updating EPEL perl modules as
requirements for other perl modules? Yes? maybe? never? maintainers
choice?

EL-5 comps versus FEL collection
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hello there,
On Fedora, we have a comps group 'electronic-lab' which facilitates
the users' life to install FEL (Fedora Electronic Lab) collection:
# yum groupinstall 'Electronic Lab'
I wish to have a similar comps group for the EPEL-5 branch. Of course,
not all packages under the FEL collection are in EPEL-5 branch due to
compatibility reasons. If you are interested to follow FEL packages
found in Fedora branches and EPEL-5 branch please visit
* For detailed list with respective versions and build dates:
http://chitlesh.fedorapeople.org/FEL/list.html
* FEL-12 Release Notes (EPEL-5 Repository Section)
http://chitlesh.fedorapeople.org/papers/FEL12ReleaseNotes.pdf
We already have 42 packages of the FEL collections in EPEL-5
repository. I really want to extend FEL support for the EL
distributions as our userbase is growing and requesting long term
support.
Kind Regards,
Chitlesh Goorah

Update Information:
New in v0.6.05 (2009/08/28) --------------------------- Merged in

those of you using encryption, this is not a problem, but for those of you that
do not use encryption (--no-encryption), then this will manifest itself if the
local cache gets out of sync with the remote store. Bugs fixed this release:

in the cache from a previous run. This will keep the metadata cache in sync
with the remote storage metadata. Bugs fixed this release: 394629 Hang on

v0.6.01 (2009/07/01) --------------------------- Fixed issues in
Checkpoint/Restart: * The --name backupname" option was added to allow the user
to separate one archive from another. If not specified, the default is an MD5
hash of the target URL, which should suffice for most uses. * The archive_dir
(cache) is now stored in a standard location, defaulting to ~/.cache/duplicity.
See http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/latest/ * The interaction
between the --archive-dir option and the --name option allows for four possible
results for the location of the archive dir. - neither specified (default)
~/.cache/duplicity/hash-of-url - --archive-dir=~/arch, no --name
~/arch/hash-of-url - no --archive-dir, --name=foo
~/.cache/duplicity/foo - --archive-dir=~/arch, --name=foo ~/arch/foo
* duplicity will now copy needed metadata from the remote store to the local
cache as needed. This means that the first use after upgraded from 0.5.x will
have the metadata copied to the local archive dir in order to sync both. *
cleanup will now work correctly with the archive dir and separates the local
from the remote files. Bugs fixed this release: * 388034 Unable to
backup * 378940 python2-6 issue / UTF-8 charset / Ubuntu 9.04 * 379386
Fix list-current-files w/ missing archive dir * 387102 Asynchronous upload

List of Orphaned Files Growing * 392905 NoneType object has no attribute
'startswith' * 393372 Error creating directory * 383412 Add InfoCodes
for upload events * 383419 Add gio backend New in v0.6.00 (2009/06/08)
--------------------------- Checkpoint/Restart capability added. Checkpoint is
done at every volume written and Restart is done at start of the next volume in
the set. Changes to normal operations include a permanent duplicity archive-dir
at ~/.duplicity to save state. To accomplish this, the signature and archive
files in the archive-dir now have three states: 1) temporary until the first
volume has been written, 2) partial until the final volume has been written and
sent to remote storage, 3) permanent with the same name as always.
Assumptions are made that if a restart is needed, then all arguments are the
same as before and that no files have been removed from the file system between
runs. From now on, the --archive-dir option can be used to change the
location of the archive dir, but you are responsible for moving the files if you
change it. Other fixes: Unicode filenames in log messages are now OK.
Fixed problem where Cygwin was returning -1 for the hard max open file limit.

Finding old EPEL packages
by Alexey Torkhov
Hi.
I was looking today for old fuse from EPEL and was unable to find it.
Seems, that packages that are moved to main RHEL (fuse is in 5.4 now)
are purged completely.
I think, that all EPEL packages there were ever released should be
available somewhere. It could be useful in situation like mine where one
need to install package on old system - it was CentOS 5.3 in my case, or
to downgrade some packages.

Request for MongoDB
by Nils Breunese (Lemonbit)
Hello all,
I'd like to ask this list if anyone is interested in packaging MongoDB
for Fedora EPEL. From http://www.mongodb.org/:
----
The best features of document databases, key/values stores, and
RDBMSes in one.
Mongo (from "humongous") is a high-performance, open source, schema-
free document-oriented database. MongoDB is written in C++ and offers
the following features:
• Collection oriented storage: easy storage of object/JSON -style data
• Dynamic queries
• Full index support, including on inner objects and embedded arrays
• Query profiling
• Replication and fail-over support
• Efficient storage of binary data including large objects (e.g.
photos and videos)
• Auto-sharding for cloud-level scalability (currently in alpha)
• Commercial Support Available
A key goal of MongoDB is to bridge the gap between key/value stores
(which are fast and highly scalable) and traditional RDBMS systems
(which are deep in functionality).
----
MongoDB is licensed under the AGPL.
This page has some information about building MongoDB on Fedora: http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/Building+for+Linux
The debian directory in the source tree contains things like an init.d
script, which might be of help: http://github.com/mongodb/mongo/tree/master/debian/
I believe MongoDB would be a very nice addition to Fedora EPEL.
Thanks,
Nils Breunese.
