How can I commit a new package to EPEL5? I adapted python3-3.1.2 from F-13 to RHEL5, anyone need it?

New git in EPEL?

After some discussion in IRC (Fedora-admin) we are wondering if pushing a new git in EPEL is a good idea. There are some changes such as git-command vs git command. So there could be some breakage. Should we push a new git and cause some breakage or stick with old-n-busted? My thoughts are to push out a new one, since I think if you are using git, you curse everytime you touch this old crusty thing :) stahnma

Hello, my name is Lee, and I am new to the epel-devel-list. I am looking for the best way to get condor related packages that are currently available in Fedora to become available in EPEL. I've looked through the epel-devel-list history from present back through mid-2007 and see no mention of condor. After reading https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/FAQ I'm still not sure how to proceed. I understand that an EPEL package maintainer needs to be determined, and it seems the fedora package maintainer has first dibs on providing the package to EPEL. However, I do not see a way to contact the persons that are maintaining the packages below to see if they would be interested in providing them in EPEL. I think the wish-list is only for things that are not currently in Fedora. Below are the fedora packages I would like to see in EPEL, how can I proceed to help that happen? Hi all, since RHEL-6 beta 1 has been announced and made public we have started to work on getting epel-6 into shape. At this point if you have a package that has an EL-5 branch that you do not want a EL-6 branch for please add a file in the EL-5 branch called nobranch, please put in the file a reason why. it could be as simple as "merged into foo in EL-6" we will not branch packages with them. there is a 2 week window to add the file. mass branching will take place on 14th May 2010. We will also not branch anything that is in AP or AP-optional. they are what will populate the buildroots. Additionally if you have a package that does not have a EL-5 branch but you want a EL-6 one please add it to the wiki https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/6/Branches Thanks Dennis and the rest of the EPEL team

Currently supported are posting tweets, reading the ones of people you follow, and sending (not yet receiving!) direct messages. - Fixed format of status messages in /WHOIS to improve IRC client compatibility. - Show timestamps of offline messages/channel backlogs. - Allow saving MSN display names locally since sometimes this stuff breaks server-side. (Use the local_display_name per-account setting.) - Suppress empty "Headline:" messages for certain new XMPP broadcast messages. - Better handling of XMPP contacts with multiple resources on-line. Default behaviour now is to write to wherever the last message came from, or to the bare JID (usually becomes a broadcast) if there wasn't any recent msg. - Added a switchboard_keepalives setting which should solve some issues with talking to offline MSN contacts. Request of MONO-2.4 in EPEL5

Hi! There are people around that would like to see some of your Fedora packages in Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) [1] -- I for example would like to see mono-2.4 in EPEL5 and mainly send you this mail on behalf of the EPEL team as you didn't yet let the team know via the Contributor Status [2] page if you are planning to build some or all of your Fedora packages for EPEL. Are you interested in maintaining your packages in EPEL? EPEL is similar to Fedora Extras -- just that EPEL is a add-on repo for RHEL and compatible spinoffs such as CentOS. EPEL uses the same CVS and the same build servers as Fedora and a lot of Fedora maintainers are EPEL maintainers as well; the main difference is just that packages in EPEL are updated more carefully and supported for a longer timeframe. See [3] and [4] for details. In short: EPEL tries to ship a package once and update it to later versions only when there is a strong need to. For branching your packages for EPEL follow the standard Fedora procedure[5] -- instead of FC-6 or F-7 targets just use EL-4 or EL-5 as branch names. If you maintain several packages (> 2) you can also use a scripted branching method (all packages from a contributor) by using the scripted branch process[6] . If you are not interested in EPEL please let the EPEL contributors know and update the information on [2] to avoid further mails like this -- that just takes a minute or two and would be a great help for the EPEL team. Please note that EPEL maintainers that might want to see your package in EPEL will likely start to maintain the package in EPEL sooner or later and thus become co-maintainers [7] of your packages for EPEL. I have done a little work by patching your mono-2.4 spec to make it can be build under the RHEL5 environment. The attachment is the nosrc.rpm. The EPEL team appreciate your help with EPEL. I see there is a libtalloc 2.02 in EPEL5 now. This conflicts with libtalloc in RHEL5 which is build as a subpackage from samba3x. Maybe this should be renamed to libtalloc2? Ray

Transmission

After battling a while trying to get either a newer version of transmission into EPEL or back-porting security fixes for it, I have decided I don't have the skills nor desire to continue working on it, specifically because I don't use transmission. If somebody else is interested in getting the fixes taken care of with it, please do so. Otherwise it needs to be dropped from EPEL. stahnma

I have a bit of a quandry with the bzr package in EPEL I want to upgrade it due to compatibility problems but the upgrade brings in abackwards compatibility problems. Let me explain:: bzr is a distributed version control system. The main hosts of bzr repositories that we care about are launchpad and fedorahosted.org. People can, of course run their own repositories. The version of bzr in EPEL is 1.3.1 The version of bzr in F-12 is 2.0.5. The version of bzr in F-13/rawhide is bzr-2.1; bzr-2.2 is just around the corner (so likely going into F-14) There are three places where compatibility can be broken in the version control system: 1) The on-disk repository format 2) The on-the-wire protocol between the client and server. 3) The API -- bzr provides a python module on which other tools can be built as well as plugins to bzr The repository formats supported by bzr-1.3 are a subset of the formats supported by 2.1. This means that there's no backwards incompatibility concerns with upgrading to bzr-2.1. But there is a forwards compatibility issue where repositories on launchpad and in other projects are not usable with the bzr client we ship. This is an impetus for upgrading as the current EPEL clients will not work with launchpad. The on wire protocol has been upgraded over time. There are fallbacks so that, for instance, the bzr-2.0 client is supposed to work with a bzr-1.3 server. However, there is one or more bugs in the bzr-2.1 client that's causing it to not work with the 1.3 server. This means that the Fedora 13 bzr client cannot talk to the server on fedorahosted. There currently is no sign of a patch for the problem. This just leaves the API. The API of bzr continuously evolved during the 1.x series (and before). Typically, incompatible changes were announced with six month lead time and then any compatibility layer was removed. If one change was announced in January and another in February, that meant that June and July would both have incompatible releases. This deprecation style was okay for developers as it allowed them six months to port their stuff forward but was chaos for distributors like us. A few of us raised the issue upstream and starting with bzr-2.0 a different style was adopted. 2.x.y contains no incompatible changes when a new .y releases (barring secuirty holes that can only be plugged with API changes). The support cycle of a 2.x release is 6-12 months (1.x and before had a 1 month cycle). New 2.x releases may break API but the justification needs to be that it makes things better for the bzrlib API. This usually means that porting should be straightforward. Plugins and code written for bzr that is currently in Fedora and EPEL all have versions that run on the latest bzr-2.x (2.1). Of the tools in EPEL, none of the versions we're carrying (that run on bzr-1.x) are still supported by upstream. Tools that are either locally written or not maintained upstream may be written for bzr-1.x and will not run on bzr newer than the bzr-1.13 that we have in EPEL ATM. This is the case with Fedora Infrastructure's use of bazaar-webserve, for instance. Upstream development on it has stopped and it won't run with anything newer than bzr-1.13. This is something of a chicken and egg problem, however, as loggerhead, the new bzr web viewer won't run with bzr-1.13 so there's been no ability to move off of it without rebuilding the bzr-2.x stack locally (something I'm in the process of doing since EPEL's bzr server isn't compatible with F-13's client). Ubuntu Lucid (the upcoming long term service release) is going to ship with bzr-2.1.x. Because it is supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server, I'm guessing that they will upgrade to bzr-2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc over the lifetime of the product but they could choose to backport fixes to bzr-2.1 instead. So what's this mean for us? It means that I'd like to update EPEL's bzr to the 2.1 branch. This breaks API compatibility but it has the following benefits: * It brings us over-the-wire compatibility with bzr-2.x * It brings us repository format compatibility with current bzr-2.x users so they can share their repositories with users of the EPEL packages * It brings us a client that can talk to launchpad, probably the most important source of bzr repositories if you're an open source developer. So what do other people think here? Is the over-the-wire and repository-format compatibility issues sufficient to override the API compatibility issues in this case?
