Packages for EL-6 (or lack thereof)
by Mark Chappell
Subsequent to the last EPEL meeting I've tried to pull out some info on
which packages have and have not been built so far...
Note: Originally there was no plan for an automated mass re-build
Out of almost 3500 packages, about 500 have been built.
A list of what's been built or not, who's packages haven't been built
and what the latest builds are can be found at:

What if I want to maintain ALL my packages on EPEL as from now on ?
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hello there,
It's been a while since I'm considering my commitment towards the FEL,
since Fedora (this distribution) 's 6months development cycle is
becoming a headache for me release after release.
I simply don't have time to fix issues related with compiler updates.
As a hardware engineer, this is not how I wish to spend my leisure
time. More than 90% of my FEL development time was about compiler
fixes than something related to its features. My current Fedora
packages are mostly for the microelectronics engineering, which
requires
* a stable and long term support platform for the user
* and less distraction for me (less software update compatibility
nuisance) so that I have time to improve theses opensource EDA
software by actually porting Semiconductor Physics to software.
So here I am in front of the EPEL community, can I _only_ maintain my
>50 mature packages for EPEL only (and no support for Fedora anymore)
* which was developed more than 5 years ago and being currently used
in the industry
* which require few minor updates per year
* which some of them are already within the EPEL repositories
* which are in the fedora repositories for more than 3 years (for more
than 5 fedora releases) and being used by many small companies and
universities around the world.
------------ FROM http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/FAQ#Contributing_to_EPEL
Is it possible to get a package only into EPEL and not Fedora?
Simply go through the review process for Fedora and specify only EL
targets for the initial import. But note that maintaining packages in
Fedora has many advantages for you, you should consider maintaining
the package in both Fedora and EPEL.
------------------------------
However since I simply don't have the time to spend on politics and a
tight release cycle, my only options so that I can still improve the
existing EDA tools myself (as upstream) would be:
1* provide EPEL support only and no support on Fedora or
2* stop maintaining all my fedora packages and wait till someone cares
to take over
Can a packager like me opt only option 1 ?
If option 1 is possible for me, then if by the end of August noone
wants to maintain my packages for fedora 12 and onwards, I would mark
them all as dead packages and concentrate only for their respective
EPEL branches.
Cheers,
Chitlesh Goorah

EPEL Steering Committee
by Stephen Gallagher
I brought this up at the EPEL meeting today, but as we were running out
of time, I was asked to raise the issue by email on the list.
Currently, the EPEL Steering Committee does not exist in any strict
form. It appears to be formed ad-hoc by those attending EPEL meetings.
In general, interest in the management of EPEL is fairly limited as
mentioned by smooge: "[W]e are also about 5 interested people and 95
people who just like make packages"
My real question is whether we all feel that this is a sufficient form
of governance for EPEL, or should we attempt to formalize a steering
committee similar to Fedora?

Requesting testers for libtalloc 2.0.1-7.el5
by Stephen Gallagher
As you may have read on this list, there has been a lot of discussion on
how to address libtalloc in EPEL5, since RHEL 5.5 was released with an
earlier version.
To summarize the problem briefly, libtalloc 2.0.1 (providing
libtalloc.so.2) was released in EPEL5 during the lifetime of RHEL 5.4.
At this time, no libtalloc existed in RHEL. However, when RHEL 5.5 was
released, it included a subpackage of the samba3x SRPM that provided an
earlier version of libtalloc (providing libtalloc.so.1).
The problem is that since the two packages are named the same, and EPEL5
was carrying a newer version, RHEL users would be upgraded to the EPEL
version. This would cause compatibility issues with RHEL5, as the
samba3x package relied on libtalloc.so.1, while EPEL5 features such as
SSSD relied on libtalloc.so.1. This was also in violation of the
standard policy of EPEL not to upgrade standard RHEL packages.
In the EPEL meeting today, it was decided that in order to resolve this
issue for now, the following steps will be taken (as an exception to the
currently-defined EPEL policy)*
1) libtalloc in EPEL will be updated to carry both libtalloc.so.2 and a
compatible version of libtalloc.so.1 (built from the samba3x sources).
2) The libtalloc maintainer in EPEL (me) will work with the samba3x
maintainer in RHEL5 to move libtalloc 2.x into RHEL proper for RHEL 5.6
(so this violation in policy will exist only during a single RHEL minor
release)
I would like this package to see extensive testing before it goes to
stable, so I would request anyone who is (or might wish to be) running
samba3x to please test this package for incompatibilities with samba3x:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/libtalloc-2.0.1-7.el5
* Policy is being re-examined to handle similar issues in the future.

nntpgrab-0.6.2-1.el5 (FEDORA-EPEL-2010-2913)
Download files from the usenet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Update to the latest bugfix release. This fixes the following bugs: - When
connecting to servers, keep the results of all DNS lookups in a cache so
reconnecting can be done faster. This should also lower the possibility of the
error message 'No hostname could be found for servername x' from occuring -
Automatically retry connecting to usenet servers when a connection error has
occured. This should fix a bug where the download queue could hang when the
network connection is unstable - Very small files could get stuck in the
download queue. Fixed - In a rare situation, the program could deadlock while
trying to remove a file from the download queue. Fixed - Really disable
activating the automatic import on Mac OS X - Don't use g_module_close() on
Win32/Win64 as it causes a crash when the program is shut down - When a network
disconnect is discovered by the NetworkManager plugin, the download queue would
always get stopped, even when the download queue was inactive. Improved the
handling of this situation - Don't wait for active decode actions to be
completed before applying configuration changes. This fixes a temporary hang or
a deadlock which could occur when changing something in the configuration while
a file is being decoded - The download queue could get in an undefined state
when applying multiple configuration changes very quick after each other. Fixed
- When using collection names > 128 characters some error messages could pop up
while adding files or performing a PAR2 repair or an unpack. Fixed - Renamed
the configuration option 'Estimated end time' to 'Estimated time remaining' to
avoid confusion. Fixes #31 - Added some more logging to improve the diagnosing
of incomplete downloads - When a collection name contains the text '.par2', all
files get marked as par2 recovery files by par2cmdline. This resulted in the
automatic remove function to remove all files in the collection. Added a
workaround for this bug
