In addition, there are some packages which were present in RHEL 5, but are absent in RHEL 6. Most of these packages are accounted for because of the dropping of gtk+ support, updating of configuration tools, standardization on hunspell, move from scim to ibus, or the move to KDE4. Some are just obsolete, and others were removed for space concerns. Some of them might be interesting for EPEL:

Yup! And probably wouldn't be _too_ difficult. I imagine you could just take the F13 (or whatever EL6 is based off of) SRPMS and rebuild 'em.

How sure are you that the packages that you list have really been removed from RHEL6? The two that I am most concerned about are exim and cyrus-imapd which constitute my entire email system! Neither of these are listed in the RHEL6 release notes in the Discontinued Packages section and nor are they in the Deprecated packages section.
And nss_ldap looks like another strange one to remove.

I'm more interested in the deprecated drivers, including aacraid, aic7xxx, and sym53c8xx. I have fairly new servers that use some of these (and AFAIK servers using these SCSI chips are still being sold).

Well, RHEL5 won't be EOL for quite a while -- hopefully exim gets packaged up for EPEL6 shortly, though I imagine your upgrade path would be a little more challening (and, obviously, unsupported).

Deprecation and/or non-inclusion in RHEL is not always the result of a piece of software not being robust. And I say this as a major proponent of Exim myself, ever since I first deployed it on Debian a good decade ago (coming from years of Sendmail and Postfix exposure).

I ran it for a long time before switching to Bacula. It's still great software. I like the option of multiple full-featured backup suites.

I think the RHT support staff might not like having to fully support multiple full-featured backup suites. I'm only guessing as somebody who is only vaguely connected to the side of the RHT house that manages RHEL.

Yesterday I had a mail exchange with scop, after looking at the version of rpmlint included in RHEL 6 beta One big question was raised by scop. Quoting from his email: " I'm somewhat surprised that they've decided to go with a version that old for a package being newly introduced and would be interested in hearing about the reasons.". Since the package does not list the maintainer's name ( last entry in the spec's changelog is scop's ), I thought about asking here... Anyone knows the reason for shipping rpmlint-0.91 when F-12 includes 0.95 ?

What would be the proper way to ask for re-evaluation of nedit ? It has a pretty strange history: included up to RHEL 4, dropped in 5.0, readded in 5.3 (or 5.4).. now I see it being dropped again ... A large part of my colleagues prefer using it ( the other ones in use over here being mostly emacs and jedit ).

Well, it's a legacy editor that doesn't support the default encoding that we have in both RHEL 5 and RHEL 6; given that it doesn't seem quite appropriate for the main RHEL distribution. You can raise a RFE in bugzilla, or with your support rep, etc.

I think this like some other technologies (tcsh, bog-standard vi, etc).. the shops that use them have a long history and get grumpy when their favorite tool isn't there (heck I had to keep a copy of vi around because vim was not compatible enough for some phd's.) I think there is a market for them, call it ring 6 (for its heresy not to have it installed :)).
