Is EPEL built against RHEL or CentOS? I thought it was built against
RHEL. The reason I ask is that the response to the BZ about memcached
and libevent is that memcached will be rebuilt after CentOS updates to
their copy of RHEL 5.5.

It's always been RHEL as far as I know. It's just recently that the needed
changes were made to Koji so that packages could be built against RHEL without making the
RHEL bits public.

RHEL bits public.

There is no change, EPEL has always been built against RHEL, we used plague
until koji supported external repos. the move to koji happened then. apache
on the rhel mirror prevents access to rhel bits from outside of fedora so we
dont make the bits public.

What's the BZ #? Waiting for CentOS 5.5 makes sense to me, since updating now would
break memcached on any CentOS 5 box running w/ EPEL memcached.

What's the BZ #? Waiting for CentOS 5.5 makes sense to me, since updating now would
break memcached on any CentOS 5 box running w/ EPEL memcached.

Waiting means RHEL users are broken _right now_. CentOS users can skip
updating memcached, but RHEL users have to skip updating libeventd and
things that depend on it (including nfs-utils).
I guess it comes down to a question of which OS is EPEL targeted at
first, RHEL or CentOS. CentOS will always lag behind RHEL, and
sometimes in the past has lagged significantly. Do RHEL users have to
wait for CentOS to catch up before EPEL will update?

EPEL has always been built against RHEL. we used plague until koji supported
working with RHEL. the epel buildroots are currently RHEL5.5

EPEL has always been built against RHEL. we used plague until koji supported

Okay from memory only I thought it used to be CentOS repositories
configured in koji.
Am probably mis-remembering with my own koji.

EPEL is built against RHEL binaries. In the past, we have waited for
CentOS to catch up before renewing the buildroots as the majority of
users and developers building locally were using CentOS versus RHEL.
And we also have the difficulty that when we rebuild/update against
RHEL-5.x+1 that sometimes people with CentOS-5.x are broke until they
get x+1 also. [And vice versa... but since thats not changing, it
seemed we used to err on the larger number of downloads.]
Paul L asked me what he should do with the memcached update and I told
him that we normally wait before doing an update of the buildroots.
However it would seem I remembered incorrectly and we update to newer
roots sooner now. Since we have 5.5 buildroots, he can update and I
will let him know.
So if anyone is at fault here, it is me.. so please direct all fewmets my way.

They are both the target :) there is no reason to target only one.
the buildroots get updated when the next RHEL is released. we clean up things
moved from epel to rhel when CentOS releases. due to this particular change
things will be broken for a short time, but thats out of our control.
ideally the new packages needing rhel 5.5 will sit in testing until such time
as centos 5.5 is out. it will mean that an epel and rhel user will have to
use updates-testing for those packages, but i think that's ok.
