Hanging out in #epel on IRC, I've seen multiple people come by to ask
where a particular package went after it's been removed. And I just
realized that the orphaned packages report is sent only to epel-devel,
so someone subscribed just to epel-announce wouldn't see anything at
all. I don't have any spare time to volunteer to make this happen, but
I wanted to point out that this is something of a problem that's hitting
real people.
I think ideally a summary list containing both packages being removed
and those in danger of being removed (maybe, 2 weeks orphaned or
something like that) should be sent to the announcement list weekly,
preferably with some kind of basic explanation of what's happening and
why. At minimum it would help eliminate some of the surprise and panic
when packages go away (assuming people bother to subscribe). And at
best it might give a wider audience to pending package removals and
might encourage some people who rely on an orphaned package to
volunteer.
