Hi All, My name Syaifur Rizal from Indonesia. I'm a field service engineer of MRI device for more than 10 years. My first Linux distro I believe was Mandrake, but in the past I never bother to find the solution if there any problem found with my PC/laptop (I just reinstall the ISO or move to old version or if needed also move to other distro) until last year when I uses Fedora Workstation 34. With Fedora Linux I try my best to solve any problem I found. Btw, after couple weeks I join this mailing list, I still can't find any relevant things that may be I can contribute to the project and that it's why I'm not send my introduction mail here when first joining this mailing list. But more I think, may be it's ok if I'm not having specific skill to contribute and just hanging around here and Ask Fedora forum. Hello again! Sorry, it's been a very busy month. From my initial observations I have decided to move on from this project, but I wanted to share some feedback with you before I go. After spending some time getting to know Fedora and the community I came to see that not only do Red Hat employees contribute to the project - which is known and expected - but some of them appear to be taking leading positions. This gives the impression that a private company has implicit control over the direction of Fedora, with employees assigned to work on the project as part of their work responsibility. I hope that my impression is wrong, because in my opinion it would not be an exaggeration to claim that implicit control is implicit ownership. Let's assume in the best case scenario that Red Hat employees are volunteering of their own volition, completely outside of the realm of the responsibilities agreed upon with their employer. This amounts to unpaid work provided to Red Hat indirectly by their employees. More importantly, however, there would still be a division between paid and unpaid volunteers. In any case, volunteers that are not employed by Red Hat are still contributing their work to a private company. Thus, they are contributing to their profits, which subsequently influences the salaries of those volunteers that are employed directly by Red Hat. To put it bluntly, from my analysis this could amount to an exploitative relationship on multiple levels - between paid and unpaid volunteers, between Red Hat and its employees, and between Red Hat and all volunteers. I may have misconceived the situation, but I am suggesting that it is Fedora's (and also Red Hat's) responsibility to clear this misconception in a public and easily accessible manner and to make the nature of this relationship more explicit to prospective volunteers so that they not be misled or even potentially exploited. It may even be helpful going forward to define new terms such as POSS (Private and open-source software) so that the greater open-source community can become conscious of - and possess greater discernment as to - whether or not they are being taken advantage of. Hi team, My name is Ferran but you can call me torrafa, i'm from Barcelona so my timezone is UTC+2. I started to using linux as my prefered Os about 10 years ago but I’m very new on fedora family. I start to using fedora like a year ago, Since then I take RHCSA and RHCE. In my free time I love to travel (when It’s possible due COVID), hike and enjoy live In techie perspective I’m interested on virtualization storage and automation. I’m interested in joining Fedora because I really enjoy Linux and I want to return something to the community. I think the Fedora project is the best place to collaborate. *Ferran Torredeflot*

I know when I brought this up almost exactly a year ago*, people weren't convinced. With the recent site re-org, and planned merge of Ask Fedora, I I'm going to try again to convince you. :) As I look back at the traffic here from the last year, 95% of it is introductions. I think those could certainly be in https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/c/fun/8 instead — either as individual posts in the #introductions tag, or added to the https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/introduce-yourself/1875/ mega-thread. Or, we could start a new one _specifically_ for Fedora Join. There are also several "what can I do"? posts. It _might_ be useful to have a separate tag (or even Team Workflows category) for that... but as I understand the workflow, that's really supposed to be supported by the Pagure ticket process. And then there's been just a few "here's an easy thing to get involved in" annoucement messages. Honestly, I think these mostly get drowned in the noise of introductions. I like the idea of a "push" of these ideas to potentially interested people, and theoretically that's where mailing lists shine, but I think probably if people's traffic from the list is mostly _other_ things, they're unlikely to find these. I wonder if those announcements would be better served by a revamped "Easyfix" process — there was some conversation about that here: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/lets-talk-about-easyfix/32759. There is also the #join tag (https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/tag/join) which I intended to be for topics like this one, about the team and process itself. Ideally, all the formal members of the SIG (the sponsors https://accounts.fedoraproject.org/group/fedora-join/, right?) would set that tag as "Watching" so they get notifications. Invitation to Join SIG to add to Mindshare Quarterly Report

Hi there, The Mindshare Committee is working on establishing a new quarterly report. As I went to convert it into a CommBlog post[0], I realized that we were only covering the teams that have reps on Mindshare. I would like to invite the Join SIG to submit additions for the report on the corresponding ticket [1]. I will then add them to the CommBlog draft and get it published. An Introduction

Hello everyone, I'm Soumya (@skeptronus, He/Him), presently living in Kolkata, India and I'm currently pursuing a Masters degree in Chemistry. Among other things I have a keen interest in programming and I'm a strong believer of the Free- and Open-Source Philosophy, and looking to serve the community. I know Python, some C and Bash scripting and I have a moderate-level understanding of the (GNU/)Linux OS. I consider myself a novice programmer though. I'm also interested in networks, security and privacy-centric designs and tools for Open Science. Its been over a year now since I have settled on Fedora as the distro of my choice after some heavy distro-hopping, and I'm very satisfied with the experience. I have not actively contributed to any major FOSS projects yet (except occasionally submitting bug reports and translations) and I have a fairly limited knowledge of the software development process. Thus I'd like to start with something simple, and I think packaging would be an easy task to learn. Ankur Sinha has already opened a "Welcome to Fedora" ticket for me and I've gone through the links mentioned there, and I think I'm ready to start. I'm looking forward to have an exciting learning experience with the community and I'm glad to get this opportunity to contribute to this awesome project. Thank You. Dear Fedorians, dear SIG/Join group, dear all, after having learned from alciregi about a "bug" (via https://pagure.io/fedora-join/Welcome-to-Fedora/issue/212#comment-772943) I am able to write to you here and share my brief introduction. Professionally, I am a social scientist; in the Fedora space, I briefly already introduced myself at https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/introduce-yourself/1875/179?u=ingli I am interested in socio-technical complexities and environmental issues. Skills? Well, I guess you are interested in the IT-related skills. Mailman I can post to and administer, git I use every day for LaTeX projects, I compile software that I need but is not yet available on the repos. I have been reporting bugs via bugzilla for a few years. At the moment I do not think I will be a programmer any time soon. Culture, diversity, bias, political economy, environmental dimensions (especially carbon) might be potentially of overlapping interest between the Fedora world and my non-Fedora-life. I also have interested in security and encryption topics – but, well, again from a social science angle - for instance regarding privacy behaviour and culture, the way people imagine security, the practical issues in using encryption software. I was searching for the most organized Linux community, and I was very impressed by Fedora - especially by the documentation and the "What can I do for Fedora?" website. I am here to learn about the community, and to serve the community in any way possible. My professional experience is mostly in quality assurance, software testing and test automation, but I am flexible to whatever your needs are. If I can improve the experience that the common person has with this operating system or with the project as a whole, that would be ideal. My primary goal is to advance the cause of humanity, and I see Fedora as a potential vehicle to a free and open-source world. If you feel there is a better community to accomplish this, please direct me there!
