Self Introduction: Jamie Sergeant

Hello, I have been using Fedora for a while now and wanted to give back in some way. I was thinking Fedora Docs could be the project for me (I got the idea after listening to an episode of the complier podcast). I have excellent computing skills, and can fix most problems I encounter, after some googling of course. Fedora Docs has been useful in this respect. I use Fedora for most regular computing tasks, but I also game using 'Bottles' and edit using Davinci Resolve. I'm not a coder and don't have a computer science background, although I can create simple shell scripts. I just love technology and computing, and I love to problem solve. My skills are mostly in writing, although I mostly write fiction in the form of stage plays, screen plays and short stories. I am also a Technical Instructor in Film and Digital Media, and have experience with troubleshooting NLEs and creating workflow documents for them. Hi all – my name is John Kizer, and my interest in contributing to the Fedora Project really just stems from a personal appreciation for the product that it creates, and a belief in perhaps “old school Internet” ideals that having a bunch of people working together across continents to solve problems in new ways is one of the greatest imaginable human achievements. Before September of this year, the closest I had gotten to anything FOSS-related was getting a Linux book as a youth that included an install CD for, IIRC, Slackware. I was too nervous about wrecking the family computer to get past the warnings about how disk partitioning would wipe out our data, so I never ended up installing, and went on blindly enjoying my childhood. I changed majors more often than I changed my toothbrush in college, but my flirtation with Computer Science ended when I dropped the Intro to Operating Systems course before I could officially flunk it. In my work life (which, thanks to my B.A. in History, began as an answering service operator), I gravitated toward chances to expand the little snippets of CS exposure that I had in college, and after a couple of programming-lite job assignments (homegrown case management for emails using Outlook/Access/VBA), started to build experience in business analytics. The exposure in that role led to my first management opportunity, and I spent the majority of the next decade in various levels of business process and data/analytics team management, typically doing quite a bit of hands-to-keys work myself. All that is to say, I think my most useful skills would be: • Developing business process performance metrics • Building dashboards / reporting packages for the contributors, owners and stakeholders of those processes (end-to-end, from data integration approaches to dashboard visual design) • Executing and providing well-structured user feedback on technical test scenarios • Laying out problem-solving decision trees and developing content to assist in diagnosing causes This reads a lot like a job application or something – sorry, some of the habits of the corporate world don’t break easily, I guess, and hopefully/maybe some of them can be used for a positive purpose? As far as communication platforms go...honestly the last time I can specifically remember interacting via a mailing list, my mental image is of the Eudora email client, so...I’m a bit rusty! Time wise...it’s tough to say when exactly the time would come, so honestly the most I can give a firm commitment to right now would be about 3-4 hours/week, until existing work (part-time assistant for my wife’s accounting/bookkeeping business) and life (full-time spouse and dad to two kids, ages 8 and 5) settles into a bit more of a routine. If you read all the way to the end of this...sheesh, please let me know something long and purely personal of yours that I can read to return the favor!

Hello great people, --- I was very interested in Fedora since I began to use Linux (about 3 years ago), generally, I was interested in Linux and how it works, so I studied Operating Systems and understand a lot of concepts about operating systems that make me feel excited, actually so excited about Computers. When I studied this subject my mind changed, my mind now thinks about itself differently than before. Anyway, My name isAli Mashallyfrom Egypt, I am a computer science student, I am 20 years old, and I need to contribute to Fedora Project with you guys, without any money, I don't need a job, I need just to work with you guys because being with people that work in operating systems is different, and I need to learn from them, actually, It will change my life than a Job with paid money. RPM Packaging learning resources

Hello, in the future I would like to become package maintainer and help maintain some packages in Fedora. In the meanwhile I would like to learn more about RPM packaging format, related tools and probably experiment with COPR on some packages I would like to maintain. What are some helpful resources/manuals to understand the RPM packaging process, the tooling involved, best practices and how the COPR works? Thanks in advance

Introduction

Hello people, I'm Marco Sgobino, a CS student from Italy. I have been a Linux user for almost 5 years, with practically the entire time having a Fedora system installed somewhere. For sure, my main machine has been running Fedora for 4 years straight, while I sometimes toyed with other operating systems. I always install the Workstation edition, but I am also a happy user of Sway window manager. I really like this operating system, to the point I'm suggesting it to many friends and colleagues who want a much more flexible and powerful system or are willing to find alternatives to throwing their pc in the trash due to Windows planned obsolescence (despite not being labeled as 'lightweight distro' or 'minimal distro', Fedora runs well on decades old hardware). I got to know Fedora by simply looking at the ubiquitous distro recommendations, it was suggested almost everywhere. I would love to help the Fedora Project in some areas I could be inclined to, that are programming and package maintaining. I have knowledge in Java, C and C++ and I'm planning to learn some Python as well. I write bash scripts sometimes, although not in complex ways yet. In particular, I would like to start maintaining some packages I find useful, especially `starship` (which appears to not be in Fedora anymore from 37) and some Sway related utilities such as `wallutils`. I am willing to learn anything useful and anything required for the task, either from the programming/maintaining side and from the security/conventions of community side. Sadly, this semester is specially tough for me; I don't want to indulge in classic student's complaining, but I really have to focus on a big pile of exams before attempting serious work on Fedora Community. Still, I would like to get the feet wet with the community, following exchanges of messages, possibly learning required skills in midtime. I will be really glad to help the moment I have the chance in the future. What are the required skills and what are some useful places/informations to look up for the task I will carry? In which other areas can I help? Thanks in advance to all Fedora Contributors and Fedora People that make this software distribution not only possible, but also great.
