Tshepo,
It's going to be somewhat quiet over the Holidays, but IRC is really the place where our contributors all hang out and work together. You can meet mentors, listen in on developing projects, and ask and answer questions from other folks looking to get involved just like you.
Here are a few channel recommendations (all on Freenode):
#fedora-join - IRC for folks involved in onboarding an helping new contributors. Also the folks who run this list
#fedora-commops - Fedora Community Operations. We help fill in the gaps, and bring more heat and light to all corners of the Fedora Project.
#fedora-devel - Our main development channel, this has the most people in it, and is a good place to listen in.
#fedora-mktg - This is the channel where we work together to help with messaging and outward facing communications. This includes our major publications and press releases.
You can find a complete listing of IRC channels and instructions on how to use them here on the Fedora Wiki:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicating_and_getting_help#IRC_for_interactive_community_support
Another new and interesting tool that we have for new contributors is our new "Sorting Hat" style website: http://whatcanidoforfedora.org. This website provides a Q&A decision tree to help you find which parts of the project you might be interested in.
Hope these help, and we look forward to seeing you in channel :)
