These statements seem completely at odds to me. If we want to give people a voice, give them an audience. Let's hear about the different pieces!
Give me an audience of 20 people who care about what I'm saying over 200 who are emailing and reading reddit any day.
Well, if we could guarantee 20 people for each of the seven talks at the same time I think we wouldn't have this discussion. The problem is that from my observation at the last Flock a lot of talks had attendance well below 10 which doesn't have to be very comfortable for the speakers. Speaking to a very little audience is IMHO a bit odd and if you take time to prepare a talk and travel to a conference you want it to have some level of reach.
