Location is still being worked on. But let's talk about the content!
I think last Flock was... fine... but didn't have the positive energy
I've gotten from it in years past. I think we should change it up a
little bit this time around.
Brian and I talked about this quite a bit after the recent Mindshare
and Documentation FADs. Those were both incredible, successful events.
Specifically, I think they were more generally succesful than the
"do-con" we've pushing Flock towards. Flock is vitally important, but
instead of focusing all of the get-together-and-do energy in one place
and time, we should plan on having more hackfests throughout the year.¹
For Flock, I think we should focus on three things:
1. Communicating the Fedora Strategy.
Everyone in Fedora should understand and feel well-aligned with the
project's goals, both long-term and tactical. We should all
understand the messaging we're using to attract new users and
contributors.
2. Planning the Next Strategy.
That strategy doesn't come from the top down, or from thin air, or
from, y'know, corporate puppeteers. It comes from the community.
Because we're so big and distributed, Flock can't be the only place
where we get new ideas, but it *should* be a summit where we
present, learn about, and discuss them.
3. Building Community Connections and Engagement.
We do amazing work as a global project, but there's no substitute
for direct human interaction. Flock helps tie us together and the
in-person interactions help us function better on IRC and mailing
lists throughout the year. To me, it's always been very energizing,
and we should emphasize that.
So, based on this, Brian and I came up with a draft idea of how
sessions should work. Not broken down into exact days or anything yet,
but basically in this order:
1. Plenary (one big room with everyone)
- A "sales kick-off"² session highlighting the overall messaging plan
for the year.
- The metrics runthrough
- Updates on Fedora Editions and current Objectives (20 minutes each)
focused on what's exciting for the next year
2. New Ideas Talks
Have the next Fedora Rings, or Fedora Editions plan, or rpm-ostree,
or something entirely new? Have something that bugs you and a plan
to fix it? Think we should grow our userbase in a particular area
by doing something we aren't? Pitch it!
These sessions would be preselected presentations with a CFP.
Additionally, presenters should tell us who they need to be in the
room to discuss / convince / get involved.
3. Topic-Focused Discussions
- SIG and Team meetings
- Regional planning for the next year
- Basically, mini-strategic-hackfests for various groups
4. A Wrap Up / Readout session (Plenary, again)
- could include a leadership panel dicussion
- five-minute summaries from the various breakouts
What do you all think?

_continuous_ hackfests as productive as these last two (and as many
others have been), we'd have astounding amounts of overall project
progress. Budget realistically does not actually allow _constant_
hackfests, but it's a nice aspiration.

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend last year, so I can't comment on
the energy level. I've always felt that Flock was excellent, and I'm not
sure it needs fixing.
+1 to more hackfests, but let's not try to take the "do" out of Flock. I
think that is a big part of what people are coming for.
As for the sessions, I'm not quite sure what we're really trying to change.
- How would the plenary be different from the State of Fedora keynotes?
- Don't we already have talks on new ideas?
- Don't we already have topic-focused discussions?
Also, no location yet, but do we have any idea when we might know? If there
was any diminished enthusiasm last year, the uncertainty about where and
when Flock was happening may have contributed.

The key difference would be that we'd have time set aside for the
currently-active Objectives and Editions. Also, Brian *subtly hinted*

Yes, absolutely. This isn't "do everything differently!" -- a lot of it

Any chance this has been settled yet?
We are pending the hotel contract being signed at this moment. Dates are
same as stated earlier, August 8-11 for the conference.
As for the process, I figure we can start that conversation soon, but I
don't want to distract from getting this rolling now.

should be a mix of continued strategy, items introduced since the last
Flock and the generation of new ideas. With regards to hackfests it
would be great to have more local / regional hackfests between two
Flock events.

Overall, good thoughts. It is good to start thinking about Flock early.
I wanted to throw out an idea borrowed from my time in the Ubuntu
community. There were events that were global on scale, but local in
execution that I think Fedora could potentially benefit from. The one
that comes to my mind as the best example was the Ubuntu Global Jam.
These included guidance from the core community, but were executed at a
local level. The events were all held on the same day or within the
same week.

At their peak there were metrics shared about local and regional
participation. The events combined local participation with IRC and
video events to make a global event. These events are no longer run,
but I felt they were successful when the community had the 'energy' to
run them.
While the events could be much smaller and simpler in scope I think
merging local participation coordinated on a global level would help
build a sense of global community for people who are not sure how to
participate yet. (for example: the new Fedora user who is not full
exposed to the community yet).
If there is an interest I can try to organize my thoughts a bit more
and put something together on this item.

Yeah, I think FAD/hackfests can get a lot done since it's a small group
that can really focus. On the other hand, communication back to the rest
of Fedora is not easy. I did see that there were meeting minutes for the
docs fad and mindshare fad every day, so that was great, but was there
any kind of "what we did" or how it went" ? I don't want to add red
tape, but perhaps we should have all fad/hackfests send out a 'what we
are going to try and do' at the start and then a 'what we did' at the end?
Also, there's a danger that some small group of folks will just
implement something without consulting the larger community (In the
cases where it affects them). Back in the flock days we tried to be very
careful to not make decisions at flock, just discuss and come up with
proposals. With a focus more on "doing" perhaps thats not really the
case anymore.

I like it.
I know it depends on logistics, but in the past we have scheduled time
blocks/rooms for various teams. If we could get the large room with
tables or whatever that all teams could carve off a part of I think it
might be better. That way, say someone from docs could walk over to the
infra tables and pitch an idea or say infrastructure could go talk to
i18n about some translation thing, etc. But I know that depends on the
room available.

are worth doing for flock:

Yeah, I think FAD/hackfests can get a lot done since it's a small group
that can really focus. On the other hand, communication back to the rest
of Fedora is not easy. I did see that there were meeting minutes for the
docs fad and mindshare fad every day, so that was great, but was there
any kind of "what we did" or how it went" ? I don't want to add red
tape, but perhaps we should have all fad/hackfests send out a 'what we
are going to try and do' at the start and then a 'what we did' at the end?
They are supposed to report out like this. I have to follow up on the CommOps hackfest
from earlier this year to see if they wrote a report. The Mindshare report should publish
this week, as the draft just got approved. The Docs hackfest hasn't gotten one yet
because I am backed up, but this excuse needs to be dealt with and one written
post-haste.
Also, there's a danger that some small group of folks will just
implement something without consulting the larger community (In the
cases where it affects them). Back in the flock days we tried to be very
careful to not make decisions at flock, just discuss and come up with
proposals. With a focus more on "doing" perhaps thats not really the
case anymore.

I like it.
I know it depends on logistics, but in the past we have scheduled time
blocks/rooms for various teams. If we could get the large room with
tables or whatever that all teams could carve off a part of I think it
might be better. That way, say someone from docs could walk over to the
infra tables and pitch an idea or say infrastructure could go talk to
i18n about some translation thing, etc. But I know that depends on the
room available.
This can be done. Will it be too noisy?

This can be done. Will it be too noisy?
I guess thats a danger, or people packed in too close and unable to get
to see the groups they want. I just think it helps when it's easy to
pull someone into a conversation without having to go wander a bunch of
rooms to find them
