Prepaid USA SIM with voice/text/data plan

Am I the only one who would like to have some USA SIM for calls and
data? For most purposes, my Italian contract would turn my phone into
an expensive brick in the USA :)

So, I made a quick search and it seems this readySIM virtual operator
has a good deal:

25$ for a 7 days of unlimited talk&text plus 500Mb of data. 212$ for a ten pack.

Is there anyone interested in this?

Moreover, is there anyone from USA willing to collect and bring them
to flock? Shipping to Italy is possible but I am afraid it won't be

IMHO, it is really useful, its price is also reasonable.

Good idea. It would be much better to have it in Flock. It's more difficult
for travellers (like us) to find it ourselves on the streets.

Sounds like a good idea. Can you socialize this somehow? I wish we had
a flock-registered mailing list for stuff like this. I suspect not
everyone is on flock-planning.

Get a count of how many we expect to need and I'll see about ordering
and bringing them. (I'll coordinate with Ruth and Tom).

there is a flock attendees list that i got a notification email about
a few weeks ago. I haven't seen any messages go through it yet, but
since I didn't personally subscribe myself to it, I'm assuming that it

I had a conversation on IRC with Tim Flink about this today. What he
warned me is that T-Mobile USA is historically very problematic about
handling data connections for phones not specifically built for
T-Mobile USA. Tim recommended that we should look into AT&T SIM cards
if you need data access (to avoid issues).

For more detail than people probably want ...

The issue at hand is how tmo-us does 3G/4G data. Their frequency
spectrum has been pretty much unique globally (split 1700/2100 but at&t
is starting to deploy LTE on the same spectrum) and there are not many
phones which are capable of using that spectrum and aren't specifically
branded or built for tmo-us (for example, the nexus s was sold as two
different models in the US - one for tmobile and one for att/everywhere
else).

If your phone has a radio which is capable of using 1700 AND 2100 (you
do need both), you can use tmo-us 3G just fine (maybe 4G but I'm fuzzier
on the details about what's required for that). Otherwise, you'll still
be able to get data over EDGE (2G speed), make phone calls and send sms.
The wrinkle in this is that tmo-us is in the process of upgrading their
infrastructure, so it is possible that they have 3G on the more normal
1900 spectrum in charleston but I'm not sure how to find out other than
just trying it.

In the US, AT&T has a less abnormal GSM infrastructure. Their prepaid
plans are a bit on the expensive side (if you can get them without a
US address, I have no idea if that's even possible) but h20 wireless [1]
is an example of a mvno which runs on the AT&T network. I had to change
some network settings to get data working with h20 on my geeksphone
keon, but that's not very difficult to do as long as you remember to
change it back when you go home :) I don't know about charleston, but
h2o sims are available around here at bestbuy [2] (USD 10 for the card +
whatever airtime you want). Activation was easy and didn't require an
address or anything like that when I activated mine.

And yes, I have spent way too many hours digging into this stuff.

This is really helpful. So the summary is that satisfaction will
depend on the phone we have. Mine is a Galaxy Nexus so it should be
ok, or at least that is what

shows Charleston with good coverage both for 3G/4G and 2G, not sure
how much reality will match.

All in all, if it was just for me, I'd take the risk and pick the readysim.

But be sure you have the right revision! It says BlackBerry Z10 is supported
but there are as far as I know 5 revisions - my STL 100-1 is not supported
in TMO network, STL 100-3 is. On the other hand, my old Nokia N9 should
work.

Yeah, I'd trust Tim to pick up the best option for us ;-).

And not saying the situation in EU is better - it's going to be better,
slowly. I'm not fan of regulations but this time it helped - it's now
becoming nearly one market... I remember travelling to Amsterdam, with
my former TMO contract - TMO CZ, TMO DE, TMO BE, TMO NL - all TMO's
but when I left CZ network, my bill raised to heaven :(

There would be a $10 charge for the SIM no matter which prepaid plan
you went with. After getting the SIM here are 2 options: pay-as-you-go
or monthly.

To make it simpler, including SIM costs for h2o you'd have:

$20 - 33M data OR 200min calling OR 200 sms
$30 - 66M data OR 400min calling OR 400 sms
$40 - 100M data OR 600min calling OR 600 sms (or some combination)
$50 - "unlimited" data/text/calling
$60 - "unlimited" data/text/calling + some international calls

With readysim (7 day sims), you'd have:

$20 - "unlimited" talk and sms
$25 - "unlimited" talk and sms, 500M data

readysim is clearly cheaper and less complicated for a short visit but
it seems designed for that while h2o is a better deal if you're paying
for a whole month or if you have a phone that can't handle tmo-us's
network.

Honestly, I don't think it's going to matter a whole lot which option
we end up using. If we're talking about buying a bunch of SIMs for
"resale" at flock, readysim sounds like the way to go - it's cheaper,
less complicated and will work with at least 2G data on pretty much all
GSM phones. I'm not sure that the added complication of having 2
options or a more expensive option that requires the purchase of
multiple cards is worth it but then again, I don't use much data on my
phone; not having it for a couple of days wouldn't affect me much.

For the record, I talked about this with Ruth and we really don't have
the budget to front any of these and resell them. However, if people
want to get together and arrange an order, I'll volunteer my services
to actually place the order (cash up front, please) and bring them
down to Flock.

Hmm, we also need to consider that different phones accept
differently-sized SIM cards. I'm beginning to think it might just be
easier to send people a link to the available places to order a SIM
and the address of the conferennce hotel and just recommend that they
order them and have them sent to their room at the hotel. It's
probably easiest (and the hotel will hang onto them if they arrive early).
