We briefly discussed in the meeting today the possibility of charging a small registration fee. The benefits include:
- Money (of course) - People are more likely to come even if they've paid just $5. Crazy, but true. And knowing an actual number helps us *immensely* with planning. - We can offer free registration as a perk for speakers and sponsors.
The question is, what is the right amount?
Hello all.
Usually when you charge a fee you also give something to the attendee (either a tshirt, bag, paper, etc). I guess fee should consider the printing price for any goodies that will be give in return as well.
Or are we thinking to charge just to let people get in?

If the point of this is to get contributors then I'd say the right amount is $0 for them. For other people you need to balance the cost of the attendee against the attendee's peceived value and those are both unknown. So any number is just picking a random number that might feel reasonable.
While it was mentioned in the meeting today that a fee was now possible I missed any discussion of planning to charge one for this event. I really think we are making this event difficult enough to attend without doing that now.

I'm inclined to agree. I'd rather try to sell Fedora merch than collect a registration fee. (I know that doesn't help us get budget for this event, but unless we were going to charge three figures for registration, I'm not sure it will make a difference.)
Then again, we can always reconsider this if we can't get sponsors to help.

I'd been thinking of it as a way to offset the t-shirt cost. Because you know we have to have a t-shirt. :-)

Maybe that's the way to go. Depends on how long we take to open reg, of course.
Is free for contributors (maybe even CLA+1?) with a small fee for those who aren't? I'm not sure if that results in setting up the system to take <10 registration fees, or if it results in getting more people signed on as contributors.
