[Bug 472835] New: Add VAG Rounded aliases to

Description of problem:
According to discussions on the Open Font Library List Modata is a derivative
of the well-known VAG Rounded font Volkwagen AG put in the public domain when
it had no longer use of it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VAG_Rounded
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/openfontlibrary/2008-November/00155...
Therefore, the Fedora package shipping Modata should include aliasing rules
that tell fontconfig to use Modata when it encounters a document or web page
using VAG Rounded or one of its derivatives (it seems VAG rounded was good
enough every proprietary foundry jumped on it when it was PDed and created
their own version).
Common font names used by VAG derivatives are
"VAG Rounded Std"
"VAG Rundschrift"
"VAG Rounded"
This can be done at the time the package is converted to new F11 packaging
guidelines if FPC approves

[Bug 18728] New: RFE: allow direct query of font files
by bugzilla-daemon@freedesktop.org

Product: fontconfig
Version: 2.6
Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW

Component: fc-list
AssignedTo: keithp(a)keithp.com
ReportedBy: nicolas.mailhot(a)laposte.net

Fontconfig can give you a lot of information about installed fonts.
Unfortunately that requires installation in the first place and does not help
people that just want to check the capabilities of a set of font files before
installing them.
To take an analogy, rpm has a query flag that will work on all the installed
package base, but you can also ask it to examine a set of uninstalled packages
using the -p flag (rpm -q -p /tmp/foo*rpm)
Please enhance fontconfig utilities so it is possible to make them introspect a
set of on-disk font files instead of working on the fonts installed on the
system.

Bitstream Vera has long been deprecated in Fedora in favour of DejaVu, which is
a community fork and extension of the Bitsream release. The majority of users
will have DejaVu installed on system and pulling Vera in is a waste of
resources.
For Fedora 11, please consider changing the e16-docs deps on
bitstream-vera-fonts to one or several of:
dejavu-fonts-sans
dejavu-fonts-sans-mono
dejavu-fonts-serif
dejavu-fonts-lgc-sans
dejavu-fonts-lgc-sans-mono
dejavu-fonts-lgc-serif
Nowadays LGC is only installed for special cases, and people use the full
version of the fonts.

The compat packages are transitory and will be gone in F12

Product: Fedora
Version: rawhide
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: medium
Priority: medium
Component: liberation-fonts
AssignedTo: cchance(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: beuc(a)beuc.net
QAContact: extras-qa(a)fedoraproject.org
CC: fedora-fonts-bugs-list(a)redhat.com
Estimated Hours: 0.0
Classification: Fedora
Description of problem:
I was using the LiberationSans version from the original announcement at
https://www.redhat.com/f/fonts/liberation-fonts-ttf-3.tar.gz (now 404). I
replaced it with 1.0.4 from https://fedorahosted.org/liberation-fonts/ . I use
this fonts in a game engine that is ported from Windows, and that was using
Arial originally. The font rendering is done through SDL_ttf (with style
TTF_STYLE_BOLD) which itself called libfreetype6.
The new version of the font has a decreased quality. I attach 2 screenshots
with the 2 different versions. Check for example the "y": the top of the letter
isn't aligned with the top of the other letters.
Note that the screenshots are taken from Debian Lenny, whose libfreetype6 has
TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER activated.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
1.0.4
How reproducible:
Always
Steps to Reproduce:
The game is in development, I don't have a short procedure to install the game
right now, but let me know if you're interested in that.
Actual results:
Irregular letters. Apparent regression in font quality.
Expected results:
Improved quality ;)
