Summary: conf.avail can be considered an FHS violation
Product: fontconfig
Version: 2.6
Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: conf
AssignedTo: keithp(a)keithp.com
ReportedBy: nicolas.mailhot(a)laposte.net
CC: fedora-fonts-bugs-list(a)redhat.com
As explained in
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/fontconfig/2008-October/003030.html
conf.avail can be considered an FHS violation
Can it be moved somewhere in /usr/share?
We'd like to make font packages use the conf.d/conf.avail split in Fedora 11
but our package auditing tools do not like an /etc/fonts/conf.avail read-only
directory at all, strongly hinting the current default should be changed.
And if it has to be changed we'd rather it was changed before scores of
packages depend on the current default.
Fedora 11 packaging cycle will open soonish.

As previously discussed, and approved by FPC and FESCO, common font packaging
stuff has been moved to the fontpackages package.
The filesystem maintainer has been asked to release the corresponding
directories in bug #477046
Please rebuild fontconfig against fontpackages-devel to pick up the directory
names it defines in macros, and depend on fontpackages-filesystem that owns the
directories.
I'll add /etc/fonts to fontpackages to avoid circular deps with fontconfig ASAP

FPC unexpectedly refused to approve a proposal that put into writing the
package naming rules for fonts Fedora had been using in the past years, and
made us change it.
Deal with the fallout.

Several major fonts like Arial and Droid Sans are created in two parts: a core
multifaced part and an Unicode extension (Arial Unicode, Droid Sans Fallback).
Splitting in two file sets allows people who do not need the extension part to
avoid installing it (since the extension is usually huge)
For historic reasons the two parts use different font family names, even though
from a functional user POW they are just two components of a single family.
There should be a documented way in fontconfig for font distributors to specify
via a config file "font foo is an extension of font bar, use it preferably when
bar is missing glyphs, do not show it as a separate item in font lists and only
allow access to the foo family when an application asks explicitely for it"
