Lakka TV: Open source game console
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all,
With Maker Faire on the horizon, I saw this project today and was
interested:
http://www.lakka.tv/
Has anyone ever worked with or used it? I thought it would be a cool
alternate to Retro Pi for a Raspberry Pi game console.

== Universe hacking ==
Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), hardware, and content development
can be the grounds for impressive technical feats -- but they're also
spaces where radical political, social, legal, psychological, and
cultural shifts can begin to take hold. This talk explores the interplay
of four levels of "universe hacking" via (re)telling stories from FOSS
projects both large and small. What does Creative Commons have to do
with terraforming? How is FOSS@MAGIC like a Biosphere?
Mel has both worked in and done research on FOSS communities, and will
explain all this with plenty of cartoons and sci-fi analogies, so come
and find out!
== About Mel ==
Mel Chua is a contagiously enthusiastic hacker, writer, and educator
with over a decade of teaching and curriculum development experience
and a track record of leadership in Free, remedy Libre, and Open Source
Software (FLOSS) communities. Mel is a Research Assistant Professor at
the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, teaches electrical
engineering, and does research on open source and engineering curricular
cultures.

Feedback wanted on my desktop Ansible playbook
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all,
I was experimenting with Ansible to automate new Fedora installs; would
anyone interested in Ansible mind reviewing my pull request?
https://github.com/jwflory/conf/pull/3
It's used for personal automation. Currently, it installs my packages
and sets up symbolic links to manage my configurations. So far, there's
not much else to it than that.
It's my first time touching Ansible in 2+ years, so if anyone in this
community is more savvy with it than me, please consider leaving a
review in my pull request linked above. :)
Thanks!

SUNY OER efforts
by D. Joe
The last couple of years have seen New York state fund open education resources:
https://www.insidehighered.com/digital-learning/article/2018/05/23/new-yo...
One manifestation of this is this set of courses:
http://commons.suny.edu/sunyoercommunitycourse/
the existence of which was recently brought to my attention. We haven't talked much about these efforts or made contacts with those at nearby SUNY campuses involved in these efforts, but my understanding from the OER event held at the UR last spring was that SUNY Geneseo is doing significant work with this.
see also
https://textbooks.opensuny.org/
http://www.nysed.gov/edtech/open-educational-resources
http://www.open-nys.org/
As it happens, though, there is a message at the root of the page on which those courses sit
http://commons.suny.edu/
that notes:
Commons Closing September 1; Groups Continue to Migrate to Workplace Environment
For the past year, SUNY Learning Commons Groups have been migrating from the commons.suny.edu WordPress platform to the new Commons via Facebook Workplace platform. Most groups have proactively migrated to the new space, enjoying the additional functionality of the system. We thank you for making this transition! As a courtesy, we do want to notify everyone that the WordPress Commons groups will be shutting down on September 1, 2018.
So, I don't know if only some of the Wordpress functionality is moving to the Facebook-hosted site and so that those courses will remain, or if those links will shortly be removed.
