I may be going about this in the hardest way possible, so let me stop and roll everything back to my root need: I have two IPA servers which manage our infrastructure. We used to have three, but a catastrophic failure on one led to its total loss. And it was our CA. So now we have no CA -- is there a way to promote an existing system to take over? Certificates renewing with the wrong Subject

Hi Our freeipa certificates need to be renewed due to passing their expiry dates. While some certificates have renewed ok, the ipaCert and auditSigningCert are renewing but the new certificates have the wrong Subject. Environment is: serverA (CRL, first, master) RHEL 7.3, ipa 4.4 serverB (replica) RHEL 7.3, ipa 4.4 serverC (replica) RHEL 7.4, ipa 4.5 Once there are renewed certificates with the wrong Subject present, there are various problems with renewing the remaining certificates, which I think might be related to the bad Subject: 1) When just ipaCert has the wrong subject no further renewals happen 2) When auditSigningCert has the wrong subject the ipa pki-tomcatd service will not start and no further renewals happen. I've been round the following loop many times on ServerA, our first master: 1) Restore good certificates from backup 2) Put the clock back to a time when certificates are all valid 3) Resubmit certificates for renewal Each time the ipaCert renews it has the same wrong Subject. The wrong Subject includes the host name of one of our ipa client systems. Each time the auditSigningCert renews it has the same wrong Subject but a different subject to the ipaCert. The wrong Subject in this case includes the host name of a system which has never been an ipa client, but might have been added and removed with ipa host-add and ipa host-del for testing something, a while ago. As far as I can see, the "cert_subject" is set correctly in the file /var/lib/certmonger/<request id> until the point at which the certificate is actually renewed. I'd be very grateful for some pointers as to which configuration options and logs to check through to resolve this problem on our production system. If its of any relevance we did change which server is the first master some time ago. Thanks Roderick Johnstone

Documented monitoring best practices

Hi all, Is there any official literature about how to monitor FreeIPA? The upstream guide mentions: 1) Testing clients using id https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/... 2) Adding a user on a replica and verifying it appears on another server https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/... There's also some troubleshooting appendices which look interesting. I see also ipactl, "ipa ping", there seems to be: https://www.freeipa.org/page/V4/Tool_to_Check_Status_of_All_Replicas (but it seems dead) https://www.freeipa.org/page/V4/Monitor_Replication_Topology , and also some indepedent initiatives all over the web. Is there any plan to provide an official way to monitor FreeIPA? My foremost concern would be to ensure that all clients are correctly enrolled and sudo/ssh work, so I am not locked out of my systems. Ensuring that replication works seems good and popular. Of course I can check that all services are running and ports respond. What are the most common ways for FreeIPA to break? Thoughts? Logon by ssh but not console?

Any ideas why I might be prevented from logging in on a system through GDM and the console, but if I log in as root and: # ssh bretw@localhost I'm able to log in without issues? And it'll tell me about failed logins for every time I try through GDM or the console. Accessing IPA host data from an enrolled workstation

Dear list, I'm currently tinkering with adding host attributes (As custom attrs, or for the moment into the description field). My intention is to then read these from the host in order to define some local behaviour for scripts or puppet. Example - a concept of machine ownership, or device class for local scripts or puppet to know about. The two ways I've thought of so far entail - having the CLI tools installed to run IPA commands, or - kinit -kt /etc/krb5.keytab followed by ldapsearch to read in the parts I'm interested in. It occurred to me that sssd or some other components I understand less well might already be able to trivially read the host data IPA holds, or that the kinit might not be needed given the machine can already read out getent aprts direct from LDAP/IPA values with a non network account in use. Any ideas or suggestion around this so I don't reinvent the wheel? Kind regards, David

I came to the team new and don’t know the background, as to what all had been done, and recently we started getting one issue in DR environment: Using IPA 3.0.0 in both PROD/DR While trying to delete a host using IPA-UI or CLI, it is giving SSL error in DR(working in Prod): cannot connect to 'https://hostname:443/ca/agent/ca/displayBySerial': (SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_ALERT) SSL peer cannot verify your certificate. I set the debug mode and on making request: (ipa ping), I can see below error: ipa: INFO: Connection to https:hostnmae/ipa/xml failed with (SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG) SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. ipa: ERROR: cannot connect to Gettext('any of the configured servers', domain='ipa', localedir=None): https://hostname, https:hostname1/ipa/xml On troubleshooting, came across this(https://www.freeipa.org/page/Troubleshooting#Authentication_Errors): Ran below on DR: Use getcert list -d /etc/httpd/alias -n ipaCert Request ID '20170303094036': status: MONITORING stuck: no ------------------------------------ OK, till here, it means certificate nick-named ipaCert is being managed by Certmonger If it isn't in MONITORING, or it is and things still aren't working, compare the serial number of the certificate with that on other IPA masters: # certutil -L -d /etc/httpd/alias -n ipaCert | grep Serial certutil: Could not find cert: ipaCert : PR_FILE_NOT_FOUND_ERROR: File not found So, something is wrong here. In PROD, it works fine: [root@ProdHostName ~]# certutil -L -d /etc/httpd/alias -n ipaCert | grep Serial Serial Number: 7 (0x7) Further, investing the issue on DR: On DR: [root@DRHostName ipacerts]# certutil -L -d /etc/httpd/alias Certificate Nickname Trust Attributes SSL,S/MIME,JAR/XPI Internal_Issuing_CA CT,C,C Internal_Root_CA CT,C,C DRHostName u,u,u On PROD: [root@ProdHostName ~]# certutil -L -d /etc/httpd/alias Certificate Nickname Trust Attributes SSL,S/MIME,JAR/XPI FQDN IPA CA CT,C,C ipaCert u,u,u Signing-Cert u,u,u Server-Cert u,u,u I am not sure, but certificate - ‘ipaCert’ not being shown on using ‘certutil’ command seems to be an issue, need guidelines to understand, whether my investigation is on current line and if yes, how to resolve this.
