I proposed this earlier in another thread, but didn't get any direct
feedback. There were a bunch of other issues spinning off so it may
not have been visible enough.
I think the opening session for FUDCon Tempe should be 9:00am-10:30am
so that we are setting proper expectations. We do hope to make the
opening session shorter by pre-seeding the pitch list on the wiki and
only having pitches for things *not* on the wiki.
(Note this ties in with something Robyn and Jared and I discussed on
the phone with ASU earlier this week. When we make our official
request from their wireless provider, which we are supposed to do next
week, we need to make sure ART 220 is also on the list.)

I'm OK with changing the amount of time we have, but I think we still
need to have everyone pitching a session get up and pitch their session.
It's important for everyone to have an idea of what's going on where so
that we can make FUDCon a better event for everyone coming, not just
those who bothered to read the wiki.

I suggest paper+marker table first -> people see the talk title clearly
and they know what the sign looks like so they can find it more easily
when checkmark-voting. Bonus points for a document projector.

Agree, paper+marker first sounds more logical.
Ian brought up a good point, which is that not everyone will have
read, or be reading, the wiki. Unfortunate, but true, so constraining
the time should work OK. 15 seconds per talk means 60 pitches take a
total of 15 minutes -- and that should work out OK.
I think there should be no "handoff" for voting. All speakers are
responsible for maninpulating the schedule, not just a few minders.
Greg DeKoenigsberg pointed out that having only a couple people
working on the schedule is a bottleneck where BarCamp is concerned.
It's not vital the speakers rush out to tack things up on the schedule
immediately after a pitch, but it should be the crowd that fixes the
schedule. With short pitches, there should be plenty of time for
voting and rearranging.

It's an inadvertant bottleneck, in that people wait for pitches to be

The last I heard, it was going to happen at FUDPub rather than trying
to wrangle everyone to walk back to ART at the end of Saturday's
sessions, which seems like it would be difficult.
Jared, is that correct?

want the duration, and the content, of your talk to be.
My gut tells me that a speech at FUDPub has to be short, and relatively
high level/superficial, for attention spans and desire to focus one's
brain on heavy issues will be low once people shift into "fun" mode.
What's the first rule about public speaking? "Know thy room."

Sparky's Den, including things like "Do you have a PA system /
microphone / anything handy for talking."

think about rearranging the schedule a bit.

Many other public speaking events occur partway into a celebratory
dinner/social event, so I don't see how it's prima facie a bad idea. I
would suggest it be done eariler in the event than later -- maybe a
half-hour or so into the scheduled time for FUDPub. That way it's
early enough people aren't feeling they're being interrupted in social
time, and late enough that roughly all the people who are going to be
there have arrived.

if they can rent a very small PA device for a speech. Most music
stores carry small, portable devices for one-night rental that include
a mic, a small amplifier, and a speaker. A store that doesn't often
can recommend a place that does. I'd imagine there are at least a
couple music stores in the vicinity of a big university not to mention
a vibrant town like Tempe! :-)

The other thing, and this just occurred to me, is that only the first
140 registrants are invited to FUDPub (afaik).
We have a very large facility booked
completely to ourselves for FUDPub,
which will accommodate more than 200 people. We also have food being
graciously provided by one of our sponsors, and basically anyone who
comes will get to eat / drink.
Basically, FUDPub capacity isn't a constraint here.
