Hi Folks,
Just thought I'd drop a note re: the southwest airfare sale, on now
through Oct. 28 (tomorrow) at 11:59PM, pacific time.
http://www.southwest.com/landing/halloweenoffer_routelist.html
Note that fares from Boston to Phoenix on our dates are $120 each way
(I actually went in and checked online), for people travelling from
that area. If you have a fare that looks substantially cheaper than
what you had originally predicted, now may be the time to buy it.
Jared, are we still planning on buying plane tickets for folks this
week? If so, we should try to prioritize at least getting in the
people who would benefit from this sale (since it ends tomorrow
night).
Thanks,
Robyn
Marriott has given us 5 extra rooms for our block. However, they are
out of queen+queen rooms, so these are all king+sofabed rooms (still
support double occupancy) at the given rate. They've given us these
on a "bonus" basis, but if we want any more, we'll have to guarantee
to fill them.

As many of you know, I've moved into a different position in Red Hat.
One of my responsibilities over the last few months has been to assist
new FPL Jared Smith in ramping up on his many new responsibilities.
Since I've been involved in planning several FUDCons, assisting with
FUDCon Tempe was a natural place for me to pitch in. After Fedora 14
is released, though, my available cycles for Fedora will change
substantially.
Last week while we were in Westford, Jared and I talked about
transitioning these duties, with him taking over the lead in planning
and executing FUDCon. Seeing as how I've only been one person out of
a substantial team, I don't think this will have any big impact on
FUDCon Tempe. We have a great crew in AZ who can get things done for
FUDCon on the ground. Jared's biggest duty will be making sure all
the details remain properly organized and accounted for, that there
are specific people responsible for carrying out tasks, and that each
of those tasks is tracked transparently.
I look at FUDCon Tempe as being not just about organizing a North
American event, but hopefully (if we do things well) providing a
template for other major Fedora events in terms of transparent
planning. One of the observations made to Jared and me about events
is that transparent planning makes them more likely to be fully
successful, and embraced by the community. By providing this
template, I hope we'll enable more of our participants worldwide to
feel they're capable of staging a major event with the full support
and enthusiasm of a great community behind and alongside them.
So, the upshot is that Jared will take over both accountability for
FUDCons and the specific responsibility of running FUDCon Tempe
planning meetings starting on November 8. I'll stay on the list to
advise if needed, but I'll mostly remain out of the way while the team
Gets Awesome Stuff Done.
FUDCon Tempe is not the only FUDCon activity taking place, of course.
Jared will also be working with the community to decide the location
and schedule for future events. He'll also ensure the planning of
those events happens transparently through this list, the wiki, and
our fudcon-planning Trac.
Of course, I'm fully committed to helping with FUDCon through the 8th
and will continue striving to get things done for and with you guys.
I'm sure I'll get the chance again in Tempe, but a big thank you to
each and every one of you who've helped with FUDCon tasks, planning,
ideas, and discussions. You rock!

Howdy all,
We will be having the regularly scheduled FUDCon: Tempe planning
meeting on Monday, October 18 at UTC 1900 (3pm US-eastern, 12pm
US-pacific). As always, we'll be meeting in #fudcon-planning on
irc.freenode.net. One departure from the norm: Stickster will be on a
plane, and I'll be running the meeting.
Meeting agenda can be seen here:
https://fedorahosted.org/fudcon-planning/report/9
Please check up on your outstanding tickets and add any information
you have to them as necessary - this helps us save time in the meeting
:) If you have a ticket that needs to be added to the meeting agenda,
please add "na-meeting" to the ticket keywords.

All FUDCon tickets: https://fedorahosted.org/fudcon-planning/report/1
See you there!

I just sent this update to ASU staff.
Thanks to everyone for your continued help. Sending an update like
this is a joy, because you guys have helped make so much happen over
the last few months. Hopefully the ASU folks will be motivated to
spread the word about the conference!

Subject: Update on FUDCon conference
Hello ASU friends,
I hope this note finds all of you well as you are deep into the Fall
semester's activities. I'm writing to give you a general news update
on plans for our Fedora Users and Developers Conference (FUDCon)
coming in January 2011. I apologize for the length and hope you'll
bear with me to the end.
In short, the conference is poised to be a major success. At the end
of this update, there are a few specific areas where I'd like to
request your assistance in raising awareness of this conference at
CIDSE and ASU.
HIGHLIGHTS OF INTEREST:
* There are over 120 pre-registrants at this point, with attendees
from points across the nation and the globe including India, Latin
America, and Europe. This does not count students, local Linux User
Group members, and others expected to attend. Travel fares have
been secured for many of them.
* We already have instructors signed up to run technical sessions that
include:
** "coding dojo" sessions where attendees develop Python and Ruby
skills
** Extending Fedora support for ARM architectures
** Security testing and investigation in accordance with the OSSTMM,
using the Fedora Security Lab
** Storage cloud implementation and configuration
** Security-enhanced Linux (SELinux) framework, policies, and tools
* Two attorneys from Red Hat's legal department, Pamela Chestek and
Richard Fontana, will attend and give instruction on intellectual
property matters as they pertain to software developers and open
source. We believe your faculty and students will find this
material very helpful.
* We've secured a hotel block at the Courtyard Tempe Downtown for
lodging travelers at a special rate, and have almost filled that
block. Details are on our web page, shown below.
* We've reserved Sparky's Den in the ASU Memorial Union for a Saturday
night social event during the conference where the ASU and Fedora
communities can intermingle and have fun after the first day of the
event.
* We're actively researching broadband options for the hotel to
support after-hours work at the conference. (Our attendees keep
very late hours at our annual conferences to take full advantage of
the opportunity.)
* We're discussing final menu choices with ASU Catering for points
throughout our event.
* Ryan Rix has started his undergraduate studies at ASU, and is
assisting Adam McCullough, and our other friends at the ASU LUG,
with footwork in the Tempe area. Robyn Bergeron, our other FUDCon
planning coordinator, and I are both in touch with Ryan often. Feel
free to reach out to any of us with questions or concerns.
REQUESTED ACTION:
I'd like your assistance in publicizing this event with your faculty
and staff. For instance, one of our local contacts can hang notices
in your lecture halls and bulletin areas frequented by students and
faculty. I'd appreciate if the faculty can help get the word out,
even before the holiday break. We encourage pre-registration because
it improves our ability to plan the event logistics. The web page
with full details is found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FUDCon:Tempe_2011
Note that it's even simpler to tell students, "Google for FUDCon
Tempe," and ask them to pre-register if they want to attend.
Pre-registration is not required, but it is helpful.
In the near future we'll need to finalize plans for classroom space,
which Jon Delany indicated we should do in December. That's the last
outstanding, major logistics issue for us to wrap up, so I'm looking
forward to dicussing that soon.
Finally, I would like to introduce all of you to Jared Smith, who is
the new Fedora project leader. Jared joined Red Hat in July to take
over that position from me, and I continue to assist him with FUDCon
to make his transition as smooth as possible. Over the next few
months, you can expect to hear more from Jared, as we coordinate with
ASU in preparation for January's event.
Thank you for your continued support. You're welcome to share this
email with colleagues if it's helpful, and if you have any questions,
please don't hesitate to email me.
----- End forwarded message -----
I'm going to be getting on board a plane around the time of our normal
FUDCon Tempe planning meeting next Monday, 2010-10-18 at 3:00pm US
Eastern time. Is anyone willing to run that meeting in my absence?
